On January 13, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi announced that his country and the three European powers (E3) - including France, Britain and Germany - have agreed to resume negotiations regarding Tehran's nuclear program.

Iran's ISNA news agency reported that Deputy Foreign Minister Takht-Ravanchi met with his counterparts from the E3 group. The two sides discussed issues of mutual concern, including talks on lifting sanctions, the nuclear issue and regional tensions.
Speaking to reporters after the dialogue, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister said that all sides agreed that negotiations need to continue to reach a long-term agreement and therefore, all sides need to create a favorable environment for the dialogue process, promoting a diplomatic solution to the Iran nuclear issue.
On social network X, diplomatic representatives of the UK, France, and Germany also assessed the meeting as "serious, frank, and constructive".
This is the second round of negotiations following a closed-door meeting between representatives of Iran and the E3 group in Geneva, Switzerland, in November 2024. Although details about the content of the discussions and the venue were kept largely secret, both sides affirmed that the dialogue took place in a “constructive” spirit and agreed to continue similar negotiations.
The latest meeting comes as Iran's nuclear program is drawing attention as US President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office on January 20.
During his first term, Mr. Trump withdrew the US from the historic nuclear deal that Iran and the P5+1 Group (including the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council: Britain, France, the United States, Russia and China, plus Germany) reached in 2015 regarding the lifting of sanctions on Tehran in exchange for restrictions on the Islamic country's nuclear program.
Iran subsequently scaled back its commitments under the deal, raising concerns that the deal was falling apart. Since then, the remaining signatories to the deal have attempted to push through several rounds of talks to salvage the situation, but to no avail.
