The self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) organization claimed that one of its members carried out the knife attack that killed three people and injured eight others in Solingen, Germany.
In a statement on the Telegram app, IS claimed the attack was in revenge for Muslims everywhere. The perpetrator, described as "an IS fighter," targeted "a gathering of Christians."
Meanwhile, German media reported that police had arrested the suspect. Speaking on the ARD channel, the Interior Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Herbert Reul, said he felt "somewhat relieved" after authorities apprehended the suspect. According to Reul, during the operation, police also arrested two other individuals, but they were not the perpetrator. The suspect is currently being questioned and police have seized a significant amount of evidence.
Hendrik Wuest, the chief minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, affirmed that the attack was an act of terrorism. The incident occurred that evening at Fronhof, a square in Solingen, where a festival celebrating the 650th anniversary of the city's founding was being held. The festival, originally planned to last three days starting on August 23, was expected to attract 75,000 visitors.
