(CLO) A U.S. official said Washington was notified by Israel before it attacked targets in Iran, adding that there was no U.S. involvement in the Israeli operation.
On October 26, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that it had carried out precision strikes against Iranian military targets, in response to previous attacks from Iran.
In this image, taken from a video released by the IDF on October 26, 2024, military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari announces that the IDF is conducting airstrikes on military targets in Iran.
The night before the airstrike, Fox News reported that Israel had informed the U.S. government of the plan. The Wall Street Journal also quoted a U.S. official and a source close to the matter confirming similar information, although details about the target or the timing of the notification were not disclosed.
Following the attack, US National Security Council spokesman Sean Savett stated that Israel carried out the attacks in self-defense. Savett said President Joe Biden had been briefed and was closely monitoring the situation.
The airstrike came after Iran fired approximately 180 missiles at Israel in early October, raising national security concerns for Israel.
US officials assert that the US was not involved in this Israeli action but continues to assist in monitoring the situation. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin also had a phone call with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant shortly after the attack was announced.
Iranian state media reported large explosions in the capital Tehran and surrounding areas, with some of the blasts believed to have originated from air defense systems. Iranian citizens reported hearing explosions in Isfahan, Mashhad, and Kurdistan province, while Israeli television channels broadcast live footage of the explosions in Iran.
Following the attack, both Israel and Iran decided to close their airspace, although the exact duration has not yet been determined.
