Israel expands its control over the Gaza Strip.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed the Israeli military to expand its operations in the Gaza Strip to control 70% of the area, a move that will displace thousands more Palestinians.

Speaking on a television program broadcast on May 28 (local time), Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that Tel Aviv currently "controls about 60% of the Gaza Strip," but he instructed the Israeli military to increase its control to 70%, Reuters reported.

According to the "Yellow Line" delineating controlled territory in the Gaza Strip, as defined in the US-brokered ceasefire agreement of October 2025, Israel then held approximately 53% of Gaza, with the remainder controlled by the Hamas armed movement.

In mid-March 2026, Israel sent a map to aid organizations showing that it had expanded its control over Gaza by an additional 11% beyond the original boundary. Reuters reported that Israeli forces had unilaterally moved concrete blocks marking the "Yellow Line" further into Hamas-controlled territory.

Israel's expansion of territorial control in the Gaza Strip will force more than 2 million Palestinians, already living in extremely difficult conditions, to move further into crowded coastal settlements.

Thanks to a ceasefire brokered by the US, the ground conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip has cooled down. In the initial phase of the agreement, the two sides exchanged hostages and prisoners, allowed humanitarian aid into Gaza, and partially withdrew Israeli forces from some areas.

In January 2026, the US announced the launch of phase two of the plan, which includes the continued withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, the disarmament of Hamas, the reconstruction of the region, and the establishment of a transitional governance mechanism. However, the parties have not yet reached a consensus on how to implement these provisions.
