Gattuso accepted to lead the Italian team. |
Italian Football Federation (FIGC) President Gabriele Gravina said: "Gattuso is a symbol of Italian football. The Azzurri shirt is like a second skin to him. Gattuso's motivation, professionalism and experience will be very important in facing the upcoming challenges of the team."
As a player, Gattuso was a key part of the 2006 World Cup-winning squad and won 73 caps for Italy. He was also part of the squad that won the 2000 European Under-21 Championship.
Gattuso has coached AC Milan, Napoli, Marseille and most recently Hajduk Split. At Napoli, he helped the team win the 2019/20 Coppa Italia. During his playing days, Gattuso was known as a player with a fiery playing style and was not afraid of collisions.
Italy sacked coach Luciano Spalletti after a 0-3 defeat to Norway in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Claudio Ranieri was one of the candidates initially contacted, but he refused due to his promise to Roma and decided to retire from coaching.
Italy will continue their 2026 World Cup qualifiers on September 5 against Estonia, followed by Israel on September 8. Currently, the "blue team" has 3 points after 2 matches, behind the leading team Norway (12 points after 4 matches) and Israel (6 points after 3 matches).
