Gattuso accepts the offer to coach the Italian national team. |
Italian Football Federation (FIGC) President Gabriele Gravina stated: "Gattuso is an icon of Italian football. The Azzurri jersey is like a second skin to him. Gattuso's motivation, professionalism, and experience will be crucial in facing the upcoming challenges for the national team."
As a player, Gattuso was an important part of the 2006 World Cup-winning squad and earned 73 caps for the Italian national team. He was also part of the team that won the European U21 Championship in 2000.
Gattuso has managed AC Milan, Napoli, Marseille, and most recently Hajduk Split. At Napoli, he led the team to win the Coppa Italy 2019/20. As a player, Gattuso was known for his fiery, physical style of play.
Italy sacked coach Luciano Spalletti after their 0-3 defeat to Norway in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Claudio Ranieri was one of the initial candidates contacted, but he declined, wanting to keep his promise to Roma and deciding to retire from coaching.
