Speaking to rural teachers, Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba, said that artificial intelligence (AI) will reshape the world .
To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Rural Teacher Initiative, Jack Ma held an online meeting with teachers in remote areas.
Here, he reiterated that AI will reshape the world in the next decade, a month after he predicted that the changes brought about by AI would exceed everyone's imagination.
In a video speech posted on his social media account, Mr. Ma commented that the rise of AI and China's changing demographics will create new challenges for rural schools.
Earlier, at the 20th anniversary celebration of fintech company Ant Group, Mr. Ma stated: "From today's perspective, the changes brought about by AI in the next 20 years will surpass everyone's imagination because AI will usher in a greater era."
Since retiring, Mr. Ma has focused on education and agriculture. He has also lived a secluded life for the past few years after relinquishing all management roles at Alibaba, although he remains the largest shareholder. However, he is still seen by some as the face of China's private economy .
According to Mr. Ma, rural education has undergone significant changes over the past decade. More and more young teachers are going to rural areas to teach, and despite living in remote regions, their thinking is not outdated; in fact, they are at the forefront of educational reform.
Each year, the Jack Ma Foundation's Rural Teacher Initiative selects 100 teachers nationwide to award them 100,000 RMB. By 2025, 2,894 teachers had applied, with an average age of 39. Approximately 98% held a university degree or higher.
Over 10 years, the fund received approximately 70,000 applications, visited 1,500 villages, and conducted nearly 10,000 interviews. Of those selected, 97.5% are still teaching in rural areas.
In addition, the Jack Ma Foundation also operates the Rural Principals Initiative. Twenty principals are selected annually to receive 50,000 RMB, which helps them improve their leadership and management skills.
Mr. Ma established the Jack Ma Foundation in December 2014, focusing on education, entrepreneurship, women leadership, and environmental protection.
