Failure and dismissal
Jose Mourinho lost his job early in the season. Fenerbahce sacked the "Special One" in the early morning of August 29th (local time), just over 24 hours after the team was eliminated in the Champions League play-off round.
A year ago, when Mourinho first arrived, Fenerbahce were also eliminated by Lille in the third qualifying round.

This time, Benfica, where Mourinho began his professional coaching career, is the obstacle.
Mourinho, who has won Europe's most prestigious tournament twice with two different clubs (with Porto in 2004 and Inter Milan in 2010 – becoming the first and only Italian team to date to win the treble), has to drop down to the Europa League – a "consolation prize" that he's not happy about either, having been eliminated by Rangers in the round of 16 last season.
But this time, the Portuguese manager lost his job even before the "consolation" tournament had started.
Mourinho signed a two-year contract in the summer of 2024 with the task of reviving a club hungry for trophies.
Fenerbahce , the team boasting the largest fan base in Turkey, hasn't won the national championship since 2014. During that time, Galatasaray has been crowned champions six times, widening the gap in the league's trophy cabinet.
In that context, chairman Ali Koc – a wealthy businessman – frequently clashed publicly with Mourinho.
Recently, just before the second leg against Benfica, the Portuguese coach stated: “Where are the new signings? This club has no plan whatsoever. I don’t believe they have a transfer list.”
Meanwhile, vice-president Hamdi Akin, Koc's right-hand man, boldly declared that the team would win "easily" in Lisbon.

Mourinho responded: “Believe it or not, I don’t even know who he (Akin) is. Honestly, I have no idea what he is, no idea what influence or position he holds in the club. In my opinion, no one in the club’s structure has ever introduced him. I know absolutely nothing about him.”
No longer special
Koc, who had met Mourinho in London earlier this summer and was already considering leaving, is known for his decisiveness.
Therefore, this time he didn't hesitate to make the decision without considering the contract termination fee.
Since Koc took over in 2018, the Fenerbahce manager's seat has changed hands frequently: Phillip Cocu, Erwin Koeman, Ersun Yanal, Zeki Murat Gole, Tahir Karapınar, Erol Bulut, Emre Belozoglu, Vitor Pereira, Ismail Kartal, Jorge Jesus, and now Mourinho – who has the second longest tenure (62 matches; 37 wins).
The arrival of "The Special One" triggered a wave of heavy spending in the transfer market: over 100 million euros for new signings.
Notable names include En-Nesyri, Diego Carlos, Soyuncu, Saint-Maximin, Amrabat, Skriniar, Jhon Duran, Nelson Semedo, and Dorgeles Nene – the winger recently bought from Salzburg for 18 million euros.
Mourinho left Türkiye empty-handed. Last season, Fenerbahce finished second in the league, far behind Galatasaray – who achieved a double by eliminating them in the national cup and finishing 11 points ahead in the league.

The spotlight on "The Special One" seems to have faded: in the last 10 years, he has only won the Europa League, League Cup, and Community Shield with MU in the 2016/17 season; and the Conference League title with Roma in the 2021/22 season.
This season, after four of his associates left, Mourinho recalled two long-time "close associates": Rui Faria (who had previously failed in his ambitions to become head coach) and fitness expert Carlos Lalin. Now, they all have to find new clubs.
Thus, since leaving Real Madrid in 2013 (contract termination agreement), Mourinho has always been sacked wherever he has gone: his second stint at Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham, AS Roma, and most recently Fenerbahce.
Mourinho's time in Istanbul lasted 424 days. This was the shortest tenure for the 62-year-old strategist since he began to shine on the Porto bench in 2004.
Mourinho's glory days are over. He no longer possesses the qualities that earned him the nickname "The Special One."
