VnExpressVnExpress11/06/2023

French player Novak Djokovic beat Casper Ruud 7-6(1), 6-3, 7-5 in the Roland Garros 2023 final on June 11, thereby holding the record of 23 Grand Slams.

Fifteen years ago, Djokovic quietly entered the Grand Slam race for the greatest tennis players of all time, interrupting the nearly half-decade dominance of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in major tournaments. Since then, the Serbian player has always drawn inspiration from the records and peaks of glory of the other two in the "Big 3" to push himself to new limits. Nole never doubted that one day he would surpass them all to conquer the most prestigious records. What many years ago was thought impossible has finally become inevitable. Djokovic won Roland Garros 2023 after defeating Casper Ruud in three sets, to become the sole holder of the record for 23 Grand Slam titles.

Djokovic's historic victory on June 11th also made him the first male player to win at least three Grand Slam titles, and the oldest player to win Roland Garros. He will return to the number one ranking on the ATP charts, extending his record of 388 weeks at the top of the world .

At 36, Djokovic still dominated the court with more agility and ease than his opponent, who was at his peak physical condition. Casper Ruud, after two defeats in Grand Slam finals, knew how high a level of play he needed to achieve against Djokovic in a big match. The Norwegian managed to do that in the early games, but couldn't maintain that level throughout the match.

Nole's 13 unforced errors in just the first five games left Ruud trailing 4-1. The Serbian player seemed a little nervous about making history. But Nole quickly showed his composure, winning the service game and then saving another break point to level the score at 4-4. From then until the end of the match, Ruud never won more than two points in Djokovic's service games.

When the first set went to a tie-break, Ruud understood that his chances of winning were slim. Djokovic, as in the previous rounds, made no unforced errors in the tense tie-break. He started the tie-break with two convincing winners after rallies with his younger opponent, before winning 7-1 in the tie-break. "He can play tenacious defense or beautiful attack, but he absolutely never makes mistakes," Ruud said of Djokovic, who won all six tie-breaks in the tournament. "Djokovic has many options; he can let you make mistakes or he can score winners himself."

Ruud's frustration intensified in the second set, as Djokovic's powerful and precise forehand allowed him to completely control the match. Nole almost completely neutralized Ruud's serve, while consistently damaging the Norwegian's backhand. He quickly won the return game and finished the set with a 6-3 victory.

After saving a break point at the beginning of the third set, Ruud put some pressure on Djokovic in the crucial service game. But Nole held on, leveling the score at 4-4 despite being down 0-30. After that game, the 36-year-old saw his opportunity in the third set as his younger opponent appeared tense. Djokovic unleashed his power, attacking in return games and successfully converting a break point to lead 6-5. He had little difficulty holding the deciding game, winning 7-6, 6-3, 7-5 after three hours and 15 minutes.

Key events of the Djokovic - Ruud match on June 11th.

After celebrating with his family and team, Djokovic sat and wept with joy. He had undeniably become the greatest tennis player in history. Ruud was also teary-eyed, having missed out on his first Grand Slam title for the third time. He had yet to win a set against Nole in their five previous encounters. The Norwegian accepted his defeat to his senior opponent with complete respect. "Another record for you," Ruud told Djokovic on the awards podium. "You've rewritten tennis history once again. It's hard to overstate how amazing that is, how great you are. You are an inspiration to so many people around the world."

In his championship speech, Djokovic spoke about his childhood goal: to win Wimbledon and become world number one. What he achieved far surpassed that dream. The great era of Djokovic, Federer, Nadal, and Serena Williams completely changed how people viewed success in tennis. Today, when young players state their goals, they not only want to win Grand Slams and be world number one, but also want to become the greatest in history. But the 23 Grand Slam titles that Djokovic has set is a very high benchmark, a record that will be very difficult to break.
