On the evening of February 3rd, at the Van Lake area within the Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giám National Special Monument (Dong Da district, Hanoi), the Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giám Cultural and Scientific Activities Center inaugurated the Spring Calligraphy Festival 2024 with the theme "Diligence in Learning".
This year's calligraphy festival features the participation of 40 calligraphers. Unlike previous years, the calligraphy stalls are arranged around Van Lake. The entire area around Van Lake has been renovated and decorated in a traditional style, allowing visitors to truly immerse themselves in the spring festival atmosphere.
This year's calligraphy festival not only attracted calligraphers from Hanoi , but also many calligraphers from provinces and cities across the country.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports Tran Thi Van Anh emphasized the special significance of the Spring Calligraphy Festival of the Year of the Dragon.
This year, 2024, marks the tenth anniversary of the Calligraphy Festival, which has become a well-organized and culturally significant event eagerly awaited by Hanoi residents and tourists alike during the Lunar New Year. Through the characters they write, calligraphers and writers have spread the beautiful values of national culture.

The Calligraphy Festival also includes a calligraphy exhibition with the theme "Love of Learning," displaying 50 calligraphy works in the front yard area and 50 works around Van Lake.
The content of the works reflects the spirit and tradition of "love of learning" of the Vietnamese people. The authors have drawn on excerpts from the doctoral steles at the Temple of Literature - National University, as well as folk songs, poems, couplets encouraging learning, and sayings of famous figures.
The exhibition space is designed to create a "Path of Letters" with nine rows of double columns, symbolizing the path of learning or the "philosophy of learning," with the nation's talented individuals as its pillars.
The inscriptions on those 18 pillars record and rewrite the classic texts of Confucianism and the ancient imperial examination system, which generations of scholars diligently studied in hopes of one day passing the exams. The two sides facing outwards contain couplets that have been displayed at the Temple of Literature - National University for hundreds of years.
The exhibition uses light combined with text to create a visually engaging art installation for viewers.
The exhibition was conceived, constructed, designed, arranged, and displayed by calligrapher Xuan Nhu Vu Thanh Tung – Chairman of the Executive Board and calligraphy lecturer at Nhan My School – a renowned center for teaching Han Nom (classical Chinese characters used in Vietnam) in Hanoi.
Along with calligraphy activities, the Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giám Cultural and Scientific Activities Center organizes many traditional cultural activities to serve visitors during the spring festival, such as: Recreating the traditional examination and education space; introducing traditional craft villages and handicraft products of Hanoi, along with art programs featuring Ca Tru, Quan Ho, Cheo, Xam, Chau, water puppetry, lion and dragon dances…
Since the opening ceremony took place on a weekend, on the evening of February 3rd, a large number of people from Hanoi and tourists flocked to Van Lake to participate in activities such as receiving calligraphy blessings and experiencing the culture.
The calligraphy exhibition will be open until February 19th. Opening hours are from 8 AM to 10 PM.
On New Year's Eve (the night of February 9th and the early morning of February 10th), the Calligraphy Association will be open all night to serve the needs of visitors.
