The exhibition showcases 39 abstract paintings she created over the past 10 months, offering a visually striking and powerful space.

Two parallel lives

Hai Duong has loved painting since childhood, starting with the folk colors in Dong Ho paintings on Do paper. In 2022, Duong began painting again with watercolors on Do paper, a material associated with her childhood and suitable for her idea of bringing modern elements into tradition. In October 2024, she released more than 30 abstract watercolor paintings expressing her own "moments of silence".

For Duong, painting is a way for her to find a moment of mental tranquility after the hustle and bustle of life. Each painting is a place where her soul can settle, find balance, heal, and comfortably rise again amidst the weariness and turmoil of life.

After watercolors, for this exhibition, Duong switched to acrylics, a quick-drying medium that saves her time.

Because each day, after fulfilling her work duties and her roles as wife and mother, Duong only has a little time late at night for her personal passion. She is confident that if she knows how to control and manage her movements well, she can still paint with soft, fluid acrylics that are no different from watercolors.

Duong's abstract paintings are powerful and edgy in their lines, colors, and brushstrokes, concealing a passion for pure beauty and the intense inner world of an artist.

Hai Duong often asked herself, "What am I searching for in this vast world?" When she felt most lost, painting appeared like a gentle destiny, opening up a world that belonged only to her: Duong's world.

Sincere about art

For this collection, "The World of Duong," Hai Duong meticulously dedicated 10 months to painting. All the works stem from genuine emotions because Duong doesn't choose a particular school or style. She paints instinctively, depicting what she sees and experiences, things that touch her deepest feelings.

Duong knows that abstract painting is difficult and appeals to a select audience, but she's not deterred because abstraction allows her to be free and most honest with her own emotions. As a long-time friend, art researcher Vu Huy Thong shared that Duong seems to have two parallel lives: one in real life and an inner world revealed only through her art.

Duong's decision not to choose a specific school of art was logical because it allowed her to break free from prejudices and constraints, giving her the freedom to explore her own world without fear. Duong switched to acrylics, which suited her temperament and personal expressive abilities.

With acrylics, she can add thick lines, clearly expressing her thoughts, psychological developments, and creative process through each mark on the surface of the painting. All of this creates a special appeal for Duong's paintings.

For artist Nguyen Duy Nhut, curating for Hai Duong was a surprise. She brought works with diverse brushstrokes, rich color palettes, and most importantly, genuine emotions. Because art only comes to those who are truly sincere.

Hai Duong confided: "When I paint, I enter another world: a world of emotions, of love, and I disregard all the trivialities. Each spontaneous, impromptu color is the heartbeat, sometimes rational, but always honest."

Each brushstroke is a touch of emotion, leading me into my own world, a world of color and peace. There, my soul is soothed. And I can be myself."
