Attendees included representatives from the U.S. Embassy in Vietnam, the Vietnam National Mine Action Center (VNMAC), the Provincial People's Committee, and relevant departments, agencies, and local units.
According to information from the workshop, despite decades of effort, landmine and unexploded ordnance contamination still affects more than 18% of the country's land area. Quang Binh is one of the most severely affected localities, with 28% of its total land contaminated by landmines; 100% of its communes are affected.
The RAPPORT project, funded by the U.S. Department of State , is being implemented by the CRS organization in collaboration with the Department of Health in Hue City and Quang Binh Province.
Spanning four years (2024-2028), the project is expected to support nearly 200,000 people and families in areas contaminated with landmines and unexploded ordnance, empowering them to protect themselves from related accidents.
The project applies methods of social behavior change, promoting safe actions and practices that can prevent accidents such as identifying, avoiding, and reporting landmines and unexploded ordnance, thereby supporting local authorities in working with survey and clearance units. This approach will be implemented through specialized training sessions, communication campaigns, and community activities.
The Department of Health will collaborate with the CRS organization to develop and implement training tools and materials tailored to the needs of local people. Core groups (including local leaders, volunteers, and government officials) will play a central role in disseminating knowledge about landmine and unexploded ordnance prevention to high-risk groups.
The project will also support VNMAC in finalizing its national strategy on education for preventing accidents caused by landmines and unexploded ordnance, and strengthening coordination among landmine action organizations nationwide.
