Encourage open classrooms.

With changes in classroom space, not only in traditional classrooms with blackboards and chalk, open classrooms can take place in spaces such as football fields, canteens, schoolyards, libraries, subject-specific classrooms, etc., depending on the teacher's creative ideas, helping to foster innovation and creativity.

Taking elective courses based on interest helps students participate more actively and enthusiastically in their studies, making the lessons more lively and effective.

Since the 2022-2023 school year, Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted (Ho Chi Minh City) has implemented a highly flexible dynamic classroom model. In the mornings, students attend classes in their respective classes, studying Mathematics, Literature, and English according to a common timetable. In the afternoons, each student moves to elective classes according to their own preferences. There, they study the same subject with students from other classes, and after that class, they move to other classes according to their own individual timetables.

Ms. Pham Thi Be Hien, Principal of Le Hong Phong Specialized High School, said that the biggest challenge in implementing this dynamic learning model is scheduling timetables for each student, ensuring that their schedules do not overlap with other subjects, and that teachers' teaching schedules are balanced and that they have enough teaching hours. However, the biggest benefit is that students can register for elective subjects according to their abilities and interests. Learning in both group and individual classes also helps students improve their communication skills and proactively manage their own timetables.

While acknowledging this as a good model, representatives from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training also pointed out that widespread implementation in all schools in Ho Chi Minh City is a major challenge due to a number of reasons, similar to what Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted has experienced. In particular, with large class sizes, organizing dynamic classes like this becomes even more challenging. The current solution implemented by high schools in Ho Chi Minh City and all general education schools nationwide is to mandate a fixed subject combination of 3-4 subjects, allowing students to choose. This leads to students having to study subjects they dislike. With the goal of maximizing students' individual potential, as envisioned by the 2018 General Education Program, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training is urging schools to find solutions to gradually implement this model.

Meanwhile, many schools are now flexibly incorporating experiential learning sessions for students in museums, historical sites, and other locations to connect learning with real-world situations, transforming the classroom environment into a more vibrant and engaging space. Furthermore, within the school itself, lively open classes can take place in the auditorium or gymnasium for math lessons, on the outdoor lawn for literature classes, or in the school garden for English lessons focusing on everyday life. Importantly, these classes can invite parents and other teachers to participate, allowing them to better understand the teacher's teaching methods, witness their child's interaction with classmates, and thus better support their child's learning at home.

According to Ms. Lam Hong Lam Thuy, Head of the Primary Education Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, the city's education sector encourages schools to organize open lessons in various forms. This is the quickest, most appropriate, and most accessible way for parents to better understand the 2018 General Education Program. When parents work alongside the school, it helps achieve the goal of developing students' qualities and abilities. Parents' involvement in the school will lead to a better understanding and increased trust in teachers, thereby improving school operations – which also contributes to promoting happy schools.

"

With many years of experience in the education sector, Associate Professor Dr. Tran Xuan Nhi - former Deputy Minister of Education and Training - pointed out that for successful reform, management agencies also need to pay attention to supplementing the teaching staff to ensure the effective implementation of the 2018 General Education Program, providing training and professional development on new teaching methods for teachers who are currently working, and boldly learning, researching, and applying advanced classroom models such as open classrooms to the reality of their localities, schools, and classes. Overcoming the lack of adequate facilities in disadvantaged areas is also crucial to ensuring educational equity for all students.
