Pressure from too many competitions
In recent years, the number of competitions for teachers and students in Ho Chi Minh City has increased significantly. Not only are there competitions organized by the education sector, but there are also many competitions from other departments and units. This has created a lot of pressure for both teachers and students.
Ms. Nguyen Thuy Dung (a first grade teacher in Binh Tan District, Ho Chi Minh City) shared: "There are too many and overlapping competitions, putting pressure on both teachers and students. The hardest part is us teachers." This sharing reflects the reality that many teachers are facing. They not only have to prepare lessons every day, but also have to spend time and effort preparing for competitions, which can affect the quality of teaching.
For students, participating in too many competitions can also cause stress and fatigue. Instead of focusing on studying and developing comprehensively, they have to spend a lot of time preparing for competitions, sometimes competitions that are not really necessary or suitable for their age and ability.
Regarding this issue, the Head of the Department of Education and Training of a district in Ho Chi Minh City said: currently, teachers and students of schools under the management of the Department of Education and Training still have to participate in competitions on digital transformation, project 06; competitions of the Mass Mobilization Committee, Propaganda Committee, Cultural Center, Women's Union, Labor Federation, District Youth Union...
The head of the Department of Education and Training also proposed that the education sector should abolish the annual competition for excellent teachers. This creates unnecessary pressure on teachers. Instead of focusing on teaching, they have to worry about winning prizes and rankings in the competition. This is a trend that can distort the real goal of education.
In addition, organizing too many competitions also wastes time and resources. Instead of investing in improving the quality of teaching, many schools have to spend budget and human resources to organize or participate in competitions.
New direction in education in Ho Chi Minh City
In addition to streamlining competitions, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training is promoting the implementation of the open classroom model. This is considered a new direction, promising to bring many positive changes in the way of teaching and learning in the city.
The open classroom model brings significant benefits to both teachers and students such as: Students are encouraged to think independently, creatively and solve problems more confidently. Working in groups and communicating with friends and teachers helps students develop soft skills, which are extremely necessary for the future. Open classrooms allow students to pursue personal interests in addition to the official curriculum, thereby discovering more about themselves and what they love.
However, the implementation of the open classroom model also faces some difficulties such as the quality of detailed lectures and the requirement for teacher training to suit the new teaching method.
According to the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City: the decision to streamline competitions and promote open classroom teaching model with the desired purpose of the city's education sector in creating a learning environment focused on developing practical skills and knowledge for students. Instead of spending time preparing and participating in competitions, teachers and students can focus on exploring, experiencing and applying knowledge into practice.
At the same time, this also creates an opportunity for the city's education sector to re-evaluate the effectiveness of current teaching and learning methods, thereby making appropriate adjustments to improve the overall quality of education.
