A simple, kind neighbor.

Sitting in their small house, intently watching the news about the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Ninh Xuan Manh and his wife Duong Thi Phuong, who live at 9 Thien Quang Street, Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi, had tears welling up in their eyes.

Mr. and Mrs. Mạnh live just one house away from the General Secretary's house.

“When the General Secretary was still healthy, he often came to visit my house. Although he was a high-ranking leader and my wife and I were ordinary people, we were very close. I know that birth, aging, sickness, and death are inevitable, but hearing the news of his passing, I am deeply saddened and grieved,” Mạnh said, wiping away tears.

From the evening of July 19th, after news broke of the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, many people on Thien Quang Street focused their attention on the official residence at No. 5 – where General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's family lived.

Speaking to reporters, many residents expressed feelings of disappointment and sadness upon hearing the news that the General Secretary – a kind and friendly neighbor of the neighborhood – had recently passed away.

Recounting a memorable experience with the General Secretary, Ms. Phuong said that in 2017, when the residential area organized the National Unity Day, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong attended and met with the people.

“That time, I and many other residents had a friendly conversation and took photos with Mr. Trong. He was very simple, cheerful, and sociable with everyone. I still remember his witty joke to the residents in the neighborhood: ‘Actually, I’ve been telling people to maintain security and order, but I’m the one who…causes the most disorder in this neighborhood, because sometimes at 3 or 4 in the morning, people come to my gate asking for help,’” Ms. Phuong recounted.

As next-door neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Mạnh seemed accustomed to the sound of the old car and the schedule of the General Secretary's commute to and from work.

"Every time I heard the sound of the car, I knew Uncle Trong was coming home from work, it felt like my own father coming home," Ms. Phuong said, adding, "Hearing the news of Uncle Trong's passing was truly heartbreaking, it felt like I had lost a close relative."

Sitting in her small house, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hiep (75 years old) was on the verge of tears: “Uncle Trong was a person who devoted himself wholeheartedly to the country and the people, serving the Party and the people until his last breath, without a single day of rest. He was a person trusted by the people, a respected leader.”

According to Ms. Hiep, the people in Thien Quang street also held the General Secretary in high regard, "a neighbor who, despite being a high-ranking official, was very friendly and sociable with the people."

A true communist, dedicated to the last breath.

From the Central Highlands , Mrs. Rơ Châm H'Réo (74 years old), former member of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee and former chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Gia Lai province from 1996-2006, could not contain her emotion upon hearing the news of the passing of General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng.

Following the General Secretary's journey and the important responsibilities he has undertaken, Ms. Rơ Châm H'Réo said that General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng is a true communist with high competence and profound knowledge.

"Ever since hearing the news that the State was awarding the Gold Star Order, we sensed something ominous about the General Secretary's health. Last night I was very emotional and tossed and turned all night, unable to sleep."

"At 6 PM this evening, we were shocked when the television announced that the General Secretary had passed away," shared Ms. Rơ Châm H'Réo.

Ms. H'Réo said that General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong had dedicated himself and worked until his last breath. The passing of the General Secretary is a painful loss for the nation, the Party, and his family.

"General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has left a great legacy for the Party and the nation. He is a shining example and a noble heart dedicated to the cause of building a strong, prosperous, and happy country," Ms. H'Réo confided.

From Ho Chi Minh City , expressing his profound sorrow at the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Mr. Pham Chanh Truc – former Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, former Chairman of the People's Council of Ho Chi Minh City – emotionally said: “I am saddened that our Party has lost a leader, a theorist.”

Mr. Truc argued that the Party's line requires a capable and creative leader throughout the process of building socialism. In his book , "Some Theoretical and Practical Issues on Socialism and the Path to Socialism in Vietnam ," General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong demonstrated this, showcasing innovative and creative thinking.

The passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is a great loss, especially during the period leading up to the 14th National Congress of the Party.

Building upon the achievements left by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, the team must strive to make up for those losses. Each cadre and leader must endeavor to inherit the history of the Party and the experiences left by previous generations to build and protect the Fatherland.

On the afternoon of July 19th, a storm raged in Hue . Following media reports of the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, many people in Hue expressed their profound sorrow.

“Just yesterday I read in the newspaper that Mr. Trong was awarded the Gold Star Medal by the Party and State leaders at the hospital, and I prayed for his good health so he could continue to lead and care for the country. Who would have thought…,” expressed Mr. Nguyen Ai (residing in Xuan Phu ward, Hue City).

As the owner of a restaurant in Hue, Mr. Ai said that during the national mourning period for Mr. Nguyen Phu Trong, he would fly flags at half-mast.

A model life for the younger generation to emulate.

From the remote border , Captain Do Xuan Diem – deputy political officer and secretary of the Youth Union at Na Co Sa Border Guard Station (Dien Bien) – expressed his sorrow upon hearing the news of the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

In the hearts of the young soldiers, the General Secretary will always be a shining example, an outstanding disciple of President Ho Chi Minh, a beautiful symbol of steadfast communists and revolutionary heroism for every officer and soldier of the border guard to learn from and emulate.

Captain Diem recalled the honor of meeting General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong at the 12th National Congress of the Youth Union.

"That time I felt the simplicity and humility of the General Secretary; he was always a shining example of lofty revolutionary ethics, always concerned about the fate of the country and the well-being and happiness of the people, including the people, cadres, and soldiers on the border and islands of the Fatherland," Captain Diem said emotionally.

The young soldier on the border expressed that every time he thinks of the General Secretary, he feels a tremendous surge of strength to continue believing in the Party's leadership, successfully fulfilling the task of firmly protecting national sovereignty and border security, and building a prosperous and happy Vietnam.

Ms. Pham Thi Nguyet, Secretary of the Youth Union of Saigon Tourism Corporation, shared: “From the observation and listening of a young person, I find that the life of the General Secretary is a shining example of simplicity, approachability, and humility. He lived an exemplary and sincere life worthy of emulation by the younger generation and to nurture “Pure heart – Bright mind – Great ambition,” as the General Secretary stated at the National Youth Union Congress.”

The General Secretary is a leader with noble ideals, unwavering faith, and a deep, heartfelt love for the people and the country. Under the leadership of the General Secretary and the entire Party, we, the younger generation, have even greater confidence in the Party's and President Ho Chi Minh's chosen path, and in the leadership of the State.

This also serves as motivation for our young generation to continue striving, studying, and working, contributing our strength to the building and protection of the socialist Vietnamese Fatherland.

"We respectfully bow our heads before a leader of virtue and talent, who dedicated his life to the country and its people."

As a Vietnamese citizen and a Vietnam People's Navy officer on duty managing and protecting the offshore platforms on the southern continental shelf of our homeland, I feel deeply saddened and regretful that our people and our country have lost a steadfast communist.

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has dedicated himself tirelessly to the Party, the country, and the people, leaving behind many valuable lessons for present and future generations.

I myself pledge to always instill and educate all officers and soldiers in the unit about the ideology, style, and standards of the General Secretary, especially the spirit of the seven dares: "dare to think, dare to speak, dare to act, dare to take responsibility, dare to innovate, dare to confront difficulties and challenges, and dare to act for the common good."

At the same time, we have unwavering faith in the absolute leadership of the Party; we will strive to study, train, and firmly protect the sovereignty of the Fatherland's seas, islands, and continental shelf.

Mr. Nguyen Phu Trong studied at the same school as me, but he was three years ahead. In 2001, Mr. Trong was the Secretary of the Hanoi City Party Committee and also the Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council, 2nd term, and I had the opportunity to interact with him in my role as a member of the council.

I frequently worked with him and received his guidance through council meetings. I felt that the General Secretary was a very refined and intellectual person; he expressed profound issues in a gentle manner, without resorting to bombastic language.

He always instructed everyone to "play their roles correctly and know their lines." His instructions were numerous, but he focused on the essentials: socialism and the path to socialism.

Although he was a native of Hanoi, he still understood Ho Chi Minh City very well. He always reminded Ho Chi Minh City of the importance of maintaining its leading role in economic development. I will always remember his words when he visited Ho Chi Minh City: "Only this city in the whole country has the honor of bearing President Ho Chi Minh's name."

Ho Chi Minh City will also view the General Secretary's directives as a profound reminder on its path to development.

Having lived in the Ca Mau forest region for decades, I was deeply shocked and saddened to hear the news of the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

Uncle Trong made a profound impression on the people, instilling confidence in Party building. He sowed trust among the people, but now that he is gone, my heart is filled with immeasurable sorrow.

Although we know that everyone must go through birth, aging, sickness, and death, the feeling of sorrow and loss is overwhelming.

THANH HUYEN

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is an outstanding leader who, despite his advanced age, remains wholeheartedly devoted to the people and the nation, contributing to the country's development until his last breath.

The passing of Uncle Trong is a great loss for the people and the country. As a citizen who witnessed his leadership of the Party through many terms, I am deeply moved to hear this news. His contributions to the development of our country over the years have been immense.

Upon hearing the news of the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, I was deeply saddened, moved, and filled with regret. Not only was he a leader of the Party, the State, politics, and the economy, but the General Secretary was also a leader who cared deeply about the cultural field.

What impressed me most was the 2021 National Cultural Conference chaired by the General Secretary, aimed at revitalizing the country's culture. This was only the second such conference after the 1946 National Cultural Conference.

At the conference, the General Secretary said that recently there haven't been any good songs, while during wartime the country produced many good songs. This made artists, including myself, feel uneasy, prompting us to reflect and think about how to make our works better, and to research, explore, and create more.

Composer Doãn Nho – author of songs such as "Five Brothers on a Tank," "The Piêu Scarf," "The Girl of the La River," "Singing to Celebrate the Liberation of Our Homeland," "Marching Under the Military Banner," and the choral piece "Waves of Cửa Tùng" – learned of General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng's death a few dozen minutes earlier through a news broadcast on VTV.

As a party member with 65 years of party membership, upon hearing the news of the General Secretary's passing, he "felt the loss of a comrade, a fellow soldier."

"It's not easy for the Party to have such an outstanding person, so when I heard the news, I was deeply saddened. His passing is a great loss, a void that nothing can fill."

"Mr. Nguyen Phu Trong is a loyal person, living and working according to the ideology, style, and ethics of Ho Chi Minh. A true revolutionary fighter," said musician Doan Nho.

Now 92 years old, the musician has forgotten many things in his life, but he still remembers the meetings between artists, cultural intellectuals, and General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong when he was the Secretary of the Hanoi City Party Committee.

Composer Doãn Nho believes that the recent period has been a difficult one for the country, but under the leadership of the Party, headed by General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng, we have achieved many accomplishments.

"The General Secretary has passed away, leaving a legacy for the next generation. His life and career offer lessons for us to continue to unite and be in agreement throughout the Party, the army, and the people," the musician shared.

During his lifetime, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong often quoted President Ho Chi Minh's saying, "Culture illuminates the path for the nation." Building the Vietnamese people in the new era, alongside cultural factors, physical development and improved health are extremely important.

All those involved in sports are imbued with two noble goals. Firstly, sports must contribute to the physical development of the Vietnamese people. Secondly, they must strive and make every effort to achieve high results in international competitions.

Generations of athletes, coaches, sports officials, and managers have always followed the example of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong in terms of spirit, ideology, willpower, perseverance, and lifelong dedication to the Party and the country.

In the field of sports, serving the people and contributing to the nation means dedicating oneself wholeheartedly to improving the health of the people. In high-performance sports, it means sweating it out on the training floor and striving to win prestigious medals for the nation.

The passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has left a deep sense of loss among the people and the country, including those working in the field of sports.
