Telescope captures ghostly question mark in space

According to Sci-News, a research team led by Dr. Guillaume Desprez from Saint Mary's University (Canada) found a ghostly question mark made of red light appearing in the middle of the universe through new data from the James Webb space telescope.

This view was observed by an older telescope than Hubble, but no question mark appeared then, because the structure was so far away that the light from it was blocked by cosmic dust on the way.

But with more advanced observational capabilities, James Webb - "younger" than Hubble by more than 30 years - captured infrared light with longer wavelengths. That's why the question mark is red.

The study, recently published in the scientific journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, asserts that it is not a character sent from aliens, but an interesting joke of nature.

The question mark in the James Webb data is actually a galaxy. Distance calculations show that the image we see of it belongs to a region of space that dates back 7 billion years.

It was found by chance when astronomers were studying the galaxy cluster MACS-J0417.5-1154.

This giant galaxy cluster acts as a "gravitational lens," meaning it is so massive that its gravitational interactions warp the fabric of space-time.

When looking into these gravitational lenses, telescopes are like looking through a magnifying glass, with the objects behind them magnified.

This allows us to see objects that are far away, beyond the reach of a telescope. However, like a magnifying glass, gravitational lenses sometimes distort what is behind them.

The ghostly question mark in the image just released is an example.

In fact, the question mark is largely a galaxy about the same size as the Milky Way galaxy where Earth resides, the researchers said.

The red galaxy was discovered along with a spiral galaxy with which it interacts and which had been previously discovered by Hubble.

Both are being magnified and distorted in an unusual way, and the result is what looks like a cynical message from the universe.

Both galaxies in this "question mark" cluster are actively forming stars, which have been triggered by the merger that is in the process of being initiated.

So we can say that we are observing them at a special moment, which has great significance for astronomical research.

Our Milky Way galaxy is thought to have undergone over 20 mergers. Observing similar events in a galaxy quite similar to our own could help us understand more about the history of our own world .
