(PLVN) - According to the Master Plan for the Development of the National Airport System for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050 (approved by Decision 648/QD-TTg dated June 7, 2023), along with the Ministry of Transport (before the merger - PV) deciding to add Gia Binh International Airport (Decision No. 142/QD-BGTVT), Vietnam aims to increase the total number of airports nationwide to 34 by 2050, including 15 international airports and 19 domestic airports.

By 2030, the target is for the total passenger volume through airports to reach approximately 275.9 million passengers (accounting for 1.5-2% of the transportation market share and 3-4% of the total interprovincial passenger transport volume). Regarding cargo, the projected figure is 4.1 million tons (accounting for 0.05-0.1% of the transportation market share).

The construction of new airports is becoming an inevitable trend to meet the growing transportation needs in the era of globalization. With the strong development of tourism, trade, and international exchange, airports not only serve as transportation gateways but also as drivers of regional economic growth.

Among these, the Long Thanh International Airport construction project, with a total investment of over 16 billion USD, is a key national project, receiving close attention and guidance from the Party, State, and Government leaders. The project is divided into three phases: Phase 1 is expected to be operational in 2026 with an investment of 5.45 billion USD, reaching a capacity of 25 million passengers per year. Phase 2 will be implemented from 2028 to 2032, increasing the capacity to 50 million passengers per year. Phase 3 will begin after 2035, bringing the airport's capacity to 100 million passengers per year and making Long Thanh Airport the largest airport in Vietnam.

The Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) announced that the actual construction volume of Long Thanh Airport is currently at approximately 30.4% of the contract value (over 10,000 billion VND), with the goal of completing the basic construction before December 2025. The air traffic control tower, considered the "brain" of the airport, has reached a height of 107.93m/123m, two months ahead of schedule, and is currently completing the final items. The first runway, a crucial part of component project 3, is also being accelerated with the goal of completion by April 30, 2025, three months ahead of the original plan.

In addition, the National Assembly has approved the plan to build the second runway in phase 1, expected to be completed simultaneously by the end of 2025, following the decisive direction of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh. The Prime Minister requested the construction units to work in "three shifts, four teams," making maximum use of time to ensure completion before December 31, 2025, in time for major national events.

Besides the Long Thanh International Airport Project, the landscape of Vietnamese airports will have another key national project: the Gia Binh Airport Project (Bac Ninh). With the goal of building a multi-purpose, dual-use airport with specialized airport functions equivalent to level 4E, Gia Binh Airport plays a particularly important role in the national defense and security system.

Upon completion, this airport will serve the training and combat readiness missions of the People's Public Security Air Force, act as a reserve for flight operations of the Air Defense - Air Force Command (Ministry of National Defense), and serve as a backup for other airports in the region in emergency situations; it will also be oriented towards ensuring the operation of special flights serving Party and State leaders and international dignitaries on large fixed-wing aircraft; and simultaneously transport cargo and passengers when required and conditions permit.

In addition to the two projects mentioned above, the Master Plan for the Development of the National Airport System for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, identifies Phu Quoc International Airport as being expanded to reach a capacity of 10 million passengers per year during the period 2021-2030. The vision for 2050 further expansion aims to reach a capacity of 18 million passengers per year.

The investment in expanding Phu Quoc Airport not only aims to alleviate the burden on existing infrastructure but also creates momentum to boost the local economy, especially the tourism and service sectors. This is also part of the Government's long-term strategy to develop Phu Quoc into an international tourism hub, competing with famous destinations in the region such as Bali or Phuket. With strong investment from the Government, Phu Quoc Airport promises to become an important gateway, contributing to the "pearl island" reaching further on the world tourism map.
