Determined to overcome poverty and achieve legitimate wealth, young Van Kieu Party member Ho Van Tron in Loa village, Ba Tang commune, Huong Hoa district, Quang Tri province, is leading the way in exploiting the potential and advantages of his locality. Initially, he succeeded in utilizing the hilly land to develop cassava and rubber trees, which are suitable and highly economically efficient.

Chairman of the Ba Tang Commune Farmers' Association, Ho Van Du, said: “With his diligent, hardworking nature and willingness to think outside the box, Mr. Tron has become a shining example in the locality by knowing how to switch to suitable crops for economic development. He has legitimately become wealthy on the hilly land that previously yielded low-yield crops. His family's economic model has been selected by the association as one of the model examples for farmers in the commune to learn from and follow.”
Responding to the local government's policy of crop diversification to increase production value per unit area, Mr. Tron reclaimed and improved 2 hectares of hilly land, choosing the KM94 cassava variety suitable for the mountainous soil and terrain. To facilitate production, he actively learned knowledge and experience from books, newspapers, the internet, and exemplary models in Vinh Linh district and neighboring communes to cultivate cassava. Thanks to meticulous attention to detail from land preparation, seed selection, and fertilization, his family's cassava crop yields outstanding productivity and quality, no longer dependent on the weather as before. On average, after deducting expenses, he earns over 100 million VND per cassava crop.
In particular, grasping the district's policy on crop conversion, especially the pilot planting of rubber trees in the communes of the Lia region, nearly 10 years ago, Mr. Tron proactively researched and learned, becoming one of the households boldly participating in the pilot project in Ba Tang commune. He decided to convert the hilly land previously used for cultivating low-yield crops to rubber trees, covering an area of more than 2 hectares. After carefully studying the varieties and learning from models in Vinh Linh district and A Doi commune of Huong Hoa district, his family planted and meticulously cared for the trees. Although rubber was a new crop for the local people at that time, Mr. Tron did not shy away from difficulties, actively participated in training courses, and proactively learned knowledge to work and gain experience, taking good care of his rubber plantation.
To date, his family's rubber plantation has developed well, free from pests and diseases, and has a fairly high latex content, making it a preferred choice for purchasing facilities. These purchasing facilities are located in neighboring communes such as A Dơi and Thuận, ensuring a favorable market for fresh latex at prices ranging from 25,000 to 30,000 VND per kilogram.
With this rubber plantation, his family earns between 50 and 70 million VND per year. In addition, he also cultivates rice and raises livestock and poultry on a small scale to ensure food security for his family year-round.
“In the beginning, when we implemented the new crop model, my family and I were quite worried. But the land did not disappoint us. After many years of cultivation, the economic model has basically stabilized and developed, and we are very confident in maintaining and expanding production. In the future, I will continue to research and learn more about high-quality rubber tree varieties to replace some areas of less efficient crops,” Mr. Tron said.
