However, if rice is not stored properly, it can cause food poisoning. The cause of food poisoning is the bacterium Bacillus cereus.

Bacillus cereus infections are usually mild and can be treated quickly. However, this condition can be dangerous if the patient has a weakened immune system.

Many people believe that cooked rice is free of bacteria and less likely to become contaminated. However, if rice is left at room temperature for too long, bacteria can multiply and release toxins.

Symptoms of food poisoning caused by the bacterium Bacillus cereus include abdominal pain, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

To properly preserve rice and prevent the risk of food poisoning, experts recommend storing leftover rice in the refrigerator. Leftover rice can also be frozen, but it should be placed in a bag or food container. Direct exposure to cold air will cause the rice to dry out and become very hard.

To ensure safety, leftover rice should not be left at room temperature for too long. On hot days, when the temperature is above 32 degrees Celsius, it should not be left for more than 1 hour, according to The Independent .
