Trash-free roads, vibrant flowerbeds along the roadside, lush green residential areas, and community work sessions have become familiar sights in many rural areas throughout the province. Through the joint efforts of various organizations and the changing awareness of each individual citizen, the movement to build "trash-free villages" is spreading strongly, contributing to transforming the rural landscape towards a greener, cleaner, and more civilized direction.

On a weekend morning, while the early mist still lingered on the hillsides, the road leading to Khe Cam village in Hung Khanh commune was bustling with the sound of bamboo brooms sweeping the road and the laughter and chatter of villagers working together to clean up the environment. Some were clearing weeds along the roadside, others were collecting garbage, and still others were clearing drainage ditches… Everyone had a task, all sharing the same desire to keep their village clean, beautiful, and healthy.

Few would have imagined that just a few years ago, many roads in the village were still littered with household waste, overgrown with weeds, and had clogged drainage ditches in many places.

Ms. Ha Thi Liem from Khe Cam village shared: “Thanks to the awareness campaign, people understand that maintaining environmental hygiene is also protecting their family's health, so they are all more conscious. The village roads are clean, the trees are green, the flowers are blooming, and everyone is happy and joyful.”

In Hung Khanh, the movement to build a "waste-free village" is becoming a regular part of community life, not just limited to regular general cleaning sessions.

Self-managed roads, flower-lined roads, and tree-lined roads are effectively maintained. Many households proactively beautify their living spaces, sort household waste, and limit the use of plastic bags and single-use plastics.

Thanks to the joint efforts of organizations and the people, the rural landscape in Hung Khanh is increasingly improving. To date, the entire commune has 20 villages that have met the standards of model new rural villages, with the environmental criteria consistently maintained.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Uyen, Chairwoman of the Women's Association of Hung Khanh commune, shared: "To make the movement truly effective, the most important thing is not just large-scale campaigns, but creating a sense of self-awareness in each citizen. Because only when people truly consider environmental protection as their own responsibility will green, clean, and beautiful roads be preserved in the long term."

Not only in Hung Khanh, the movement to build a green, clean, and beautiful rural environment is spreading strongly in many localities in the province. In Yen Ninh village, Luong Thinh commune, community labor sessions have become a familiar activity every Sunday.

Ms. Vu Thi Ha, Secretary of the Yen Ninh Village Party Branch, said: “To get people to participate, cadres and Party members must first set a good example. We integrate propaganda into village meetings and branch meetings so that everyone understands the benefits of preserving the environment. When they see the landscape changing positively, the people respond very enthusiastically.”

It is noteworthy that many current environmental protection models have gradually become well-established. In many residential areas, residents regularly maintain practices such as sorting waste at source, regular waste collection, and constructing organic waste treatment pits.

Ms. Ha Thi Kim Oanh from Yen Ninh village shared: “Now, when people see trash, they remind each other to pick it up and dispose of it in the designated places. Families try to maintain cleanliness from inside their houses to outside the alleys. The air is fresher, the village roads are cleaner and more beautiful, and everyone is conscious of keeping things clean.”

Community activities aimed at maintaining environmental hygiene also contribute to strengthening community bonds. After each work session, residents chat, share experiences, and work together to build a cultural life in their neighborhood.

According to Mr. Le Tri Hung, Deputy Head of the Economic Department of Bao Ai Commune, to effectively build the "Waste-Free Village" model, the locality pays special attention to propaganda and mobilization of people to change their living habits. Along with that, they maintain self-governing environmental groups and mobilize the participation of associations and organizations in monitoring, reminding, and organizing regular sanitation activities.

"Environmental protection is not the responsibility of any one person alone. When people participate, it brings tangible results, from improving the rural landscape to enhancing the quality of life," Mr. Hung emphasized.

In the process of building new rural areas, the environment is a crucial criterion. To date, the collection and treatment of household solid waste meeting standards and regulations throughout the province has reached 84.5%; and over 63% of households are sorting household solid waste at source. More than just numbers or evaluation criteria, it's the change in people's awareness that matters. From considering environmental sanitation as the responsibility of the government or organizations, many people are now proactively participating through concrete daily actions.

A properly disposed trash bag, a clean-swept street, or a well-cared-for row of flowers… these small things contribute to a new look for rural areas. When environmental awareness becomes a habit, villages gradually transform into civilized, clean, and livable places.
