Sentenced to 8 years in prison for engaging in "roundabout" scams.

(Dan Tri Newspaper) - Despite being unable to repay debts due to business losses, Sam still borrowed money from many people. The defendant lied about selling land mortgaged to the bank to swindle 850 million VND from a woman.

On December 5th, the People's Court of Vinh Long province held a first-instance criminal trial and sentenced defendant Phan Thi Hong Sam (40 years old) to 8 years in prison for the crime of fraud and appropriation of property.

According to the indictment, due to owing money to many people during his business dealings, on September 20, 2023, Sam asked to borrow 1.2 billion VND from Mr. LDK, residing in Vung Liem district. Sam promised to repay the debt after 3 days, but when the repayment deadline arrived, he said he had no money.

Later, Sam told Ms. LTHD, residing in Vinh Long City, that he had two plots of land mortgaged to the bank for a loan of 1 billion VND, but someone was now offering to buy the two plots for over 1.5 billion VND. Therefore, he needed to borrow 950 million VND from Ms. D. to pay off the bank loan and retrieve the land use rights certificate.

To gain Ms. D.'s trust, Sam made a written commitment that he would complete the transaction procedures and return the borrowed money within 3 days.

After receiving the money from Ms. D., Sam used it to pay off his debt to Mr. K.

Ms. D. repeatedly demanded her money back, but Sam only paid 100 million VND, while embezzling 850 million VND, which led the victim to file a complaint.
