Glorious labor during the rice harvest season.

Việt NamViệt Nam14/06/2024

Remembering Uncle Ho's teachings from years ago: "Labor is a glorious, honorable, joyful, and heroic undertaking," the people of Vietnam, including the Ha Nhin people, have always considered labor to be glorious, a sacred right and duty, and a source of life and happiness for everyone.

The photo series "Labor is a glorious and honorable career..." by author Duong Quoc Toan consists of 10 photos that generally depict the landscape and working life of the Black Ha Nhi people in Y Ty commune, Bat Xat district, Lao Cai province. The author submitted the series to the Happy Vietnam Photo and Video Contest, organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications .

For generations, upland sticky rice has been regarded by the Ha Nhi people as a precious gift from heaven. This "precious grain" not only helps the people avoid hunger but is also used to make many delicious dishes, offerings for religious ceremonies, and various specialties that reflect the rich cultural identity of the highlands.

Upland rice is grown on steep hillsides. During harvest season, the Ha Nhi people have to climb mountains and carefully navigate each rice field to pick each plump ear of rice.

During the upland rice harvest, Ha Nhi ethnic women carry baskets on their backs and use steel sickles (tools used for cutting) to pick and pluck each rice stalk individually. The rice stalks are bundled together, and the grains are threshed in the field or brought home to be dried whole for long-term use.

Harvesting upland rice requires meticulousness and hard work. Those who harvest the rice must gather each ear individually, unlike harvesting paddy rice, where a sickle can be used to cut 15-20 ears at a time, much faster.

Most of the upland rice fields are located on steep hills and mountains, far from residential areas. Therefore, during harvest season, farmers face many difficulties in cutting and transporting the rice.

Located at an altitude of 2,000m above sea level, Y Tý commune, Bát Xát district, Lào Cai province, is primarily inhabited by the Black Hà Nhì ethnic group.

Today, the Ha Nhi people always consider labor to be glorious, thereby promoting labor for socio-economic development in accordance with the principles of studying and following the thoughts, ethics, and style of Ho Chi Minh.
