The Tinh Bien border market boasts a prime location bordering the Vietnam-Cambodia border, always bustling with buyers and sellers, and is considered a major wholesale market supplying goods to the entire Mekong Delta region. The market's greatest attraction comes from its abundant, diverse, and especially affordable supply of goods. According to Nguyen Van Sam, Director of the Tinh Bien Ward General Service Center, the Tinh Bien market was built in 1999, completed and officially put into operation in February 2002. It is a type II market with a total of 605 kiosks and stalls. Currently, the number of small traders operating there ranges from 250 to 300 households.
Upon entering the food area, visitors are captivated by the stalls displaying a variety of delicious dried and fermented fish products, beautifully arranged. These are specialties with distinctive and incredibly appealing flavors of the Mekong Delta, such as: fermented snakehead fish paste, dried catfish, dried tilapia, fermented Thai fish paste, fermented sặc fish paste, fermented catfish paste, fermented lóc fish paste… The market also attracts visitors with its quality clothing, household goods, and daily necessities at reasonable prices.
Besides winning over customers with product quality, the vendors here are also very welcoming, creating a positive impression on tourists. Mr. Le Minh Tuan, a tourist from Long Xuyen ward, shared: “Here, the goods are abundant and diverse, and the prices are very affordable and publicly displayed, so we feel secure when shopping. Especially, the vendors are cheerful and welcoming, making shopping very comfortable.”
According to the vendors, the market operates year-round, but is busiest from after the Lunar New Year until the fifth lunar month. The vendors jokingly call this the "peak season." On weekends, the number of customers doubles, with the busiest period being during the Via Ba Chua Xu festival at Sam Mountain.
Since its opening in 2002, the market building has suffered from significant infrastructure deterioration, with damaged corrugated iron roofs and localized leaks during the rainy season. This has hampered business operations and damaged goods for vendors. Alongside the challenges of infrastructure, restoring order remains difficult, with continued encroachment, especially during peak hours. Meanwhile, vendors inside the market building arbitrarily display shelves and goods outside designated lines, encroaching on walkways and detracting from the market's aesthetics. The practice of vendors covering their goods when leaving also hinders emergency response efforts. Many street vendors brazenly occupy the market square, resulting in a lack of parking space for vehicles entering the market.
Faced with this situation, Tinh Bien ward is determined to restore order and create a civilized business environment. Chairman of the Tinh Bien Ward People's Committee, Tran Hieu Thuan, stated: “We have requested functional forces to continue informing, educating, and mobilizing small traders and individuals selling at the market to voluntarily raise their awareness and strictly comply with regulations, rules, and business procedures, ensuring security, order, and civilized commerce.”
Along with public awareness campaigns, functional units are conducting inspections and strictly handling cases of illegal trading that detract from urban aesthetics. Acts of encroaching on roads, sidewalks, market areas, and rented spaces within the Tịnh Biên market building will be thoroughly addressed. Management forces are also reviewing and rearranging trading areas to ensure traffic order, safety, and urban aesthetics, resolutely preventing the recurrence of illegal encroachment.
