At 20 years old and 1.83m tall, Ta Ngoc Tuong is one of the promising young athletes in Vietnamese athletics.
He defeated Tran Dinh Son twice.
At the 2025 Unified Speed Cup, Ngoc Tuong competed for the first time at the national team level. Although he lacked the practical experience of his seniors, Ngoc Tuong repeatedly surprised everyone.
On April 16th, in the final of his specialty event, the 400m race, Ngoc Tuong defeated veteran Tran Dinh Son with a time of 46.75 seconds.
Although it was explained that this wasn't the time for the athletes to exert themselves, which is why Tran Dinh Son was slower than Ngoc Tuong, on April 17th, Ngoc Tuong once again won the 200m event.
Having twice surpassed his senior, who had achieved many domestic and international successes, Ngoc Tuong made a name for himself.
Ngoc Tuong was born and raised in Phu Tho , which is also where he currently serves. During his primary school years, due to his exceptional height compared to his peers, Tuong was selected to participate in the Phu Dong Sports Festival.
At the age of 13 or 14, he officially started pursuing athletics. Although he started sports quite early, his achievements came late.
Initially, Ngoc Tuong was being groomed for the 800m and 1,500m middle-distance races. However, Tuong shared that because he tends to exert himself early on, he couldn't compete with his rivals on the track.
They want to break the national record.
At the age of 17, a turning point came when his coaches redirected him to compete in the 200m and 400m. At the 2022 National Youth Athletics Championships, he won a bronze medal in the 400m. That was the first medal in Ngoc Tuong's career.
And from then on, his achievements became increasingly numerous. In 2024, Ngoc Tuong broke the national youth record with a time of 46.54 seconds in the men's 400m race. And now, he has won two gold medals at the Thong Nhat Speed Cup.
After the victory, Ngoc Tuong said: "I came to the Speed Cup to achieve a good result and hoped to be selected to compete in the Asian Championships in May. Currently, my name is on the list, but whether or not I get to compete depends on many factors."
"My goal is to strive every day to improve my performance. First, I want to surpass my own record, and further down the line, I hope to break the national record." Currently, the national record for the men's 400m is 45.99 seconds, set by Quách Công Lịch in 2015.
Currently, Ngoc Tuong is coached by Bulgarian expert Vladimir Simeonov, who has nearly 10 years of experience coaching the Vietnamese athletics 400m team.
At 20 years old, Ngoc Tuong is just a rising star in Vietnamese athletics. Everyone is hoping that Ngoc Tuong will continue to shine even brighter on the track in the future.
Ngoc Tuong will go even further.
That's the assessment of senior athlete Tran Dinh Son regarding Ngoc Tuong. Speaking to Tuoi Tre newspaper , Tran Dinh Son expressed regret at losing to Ngoc Tuong in his specialty event, the 400m race.
Nevertheless, the veteran athlete from Ha Tinh still offered praise: "I've known Tuong for quite a while, and I'm aware of his achievements and abilities. I believe Tuong is an athlete with potential and a bright future ahead. I hope he will work hard to achieve even greater success."
