Develop a plan for recovering and utilizing CO2 resources.

(GLO) - The Vietnam Geological and Mineral Resources Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) has issued a document guiding the Gia Lai Provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment on the recovery and utilization of CO2 gas detected during water drilling in the locality.

According to the guidelines, CO2 is classified as a mineral subject to the regulations of the Law on Geology and Minerals. Therefore, all exploration, exploitation, and utilization activities must strictly comply with the provisions of current law.

According to a report by the Gia Lai Provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment, CO2 is released naturally into the environment during the water drilling process.

Based on this, the Vietnam Geological and Mineral Resources Department requests the Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee to urgently implement a plan to protect unexploited mineral resources. In case of force majeure requiring recovery, a suitable management and recovery plan should be developed to avoid wasting resources, while simultaneously protecting the environment and ensuring the safety of people in the area.

To accurately assess the reserves, current status, and technical characteristics of CO2 resources, the Vietnam Geological and Mineral Resources Department requests the Gia Lai Provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment to proactively coordinate with the Central Vietnam Water Resources Planning and Investigation Federation to conduct surveys, monitoring, and provide advice on related technical solutions.

Previously, as reported by Gia Lai Newspaper and Radio & Television, the family of Mr. Le Danh Lang (born in 1964, residing in Chu Prong commune) hired a well drilling company to irrigate their 1.8 hectares of coffee plantation. When the well reached a depth of about 150 meters, a column of gas and water suddenly appeared inside, gushing forcefully to the surface with high pressure, reaching a height of nearly 15 meters.

Shortly afterward, the People's Committee of Chu Prong commune issued a document requesting residents in the area to stop using pneumatic drills to extract groundwater; and also advised them to stay away from the drilled wells to ensure safety.

In 2024, a similar phenomenon was also recorded when drilling wells in the areas of Ia Kly and Ia Phin communes (now part of Chu Prong commune).

After the discovery, authorities and local residents implemented measures such as placing concrete pillars, sealing the wellhead, and installing a regulating valve to prevent further gas eruptions.

To date, the well in the former Ia Kly commune has been sealed, and no more eruptions occur; while the well in the former Ia Phin commune has experienced a significant reduction in pressure.
