Climate change (CC) is becoming increasingly complex and unpredictable, negatively impacting all aspects of socio -economic life. The crop sector in particular and the agriculture and environment sector in general are facing many enormous challenges. Therefore, it requires specific and timely strategic directions and actions to ensure the goal of sustainable development, effective adaptation to CC and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with international commitments.
In that context, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment is developing a Project on crop production with reduced emissions for the period 2025-2035 in Vietnam (referred to as the Project). The objective of the Project is to synchronously deploy solutions to promote the transformation of crop production systems towards low emissions, climate change adaptation, increasing income, improving people's livelihoods and sustainable development. Thereby, helping to improve the competitiveness of the crop production sector, ensuring national food security, gradually forming a modern, ecological agriculture that is resilient to the impacts of climate change, contributing to the implementation of Vietnam's international commitment to achieving a net emission of "0" by 2050...
According to the specific targets set out in the draft Project, by 2030 the crop sector will strive to contribute to reducing 30% of total methane emissions and at least 10% of total greenhouse gas emissions compared to 2020. Build and develop a “low emission” label for crop products. Organize the implementation of at least 15 emission reduction production models in ecological zones...
According to the results of the 2020 national greenhouse gas inventory announced by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Vietnam's total greenhouse gas emissions reached about 528.5 million tons of CO2 equivalent, of which the agricultural sector accounted for 19.8%...
At the conference, delegates were informed by the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and related units about the implementation of the Project and presented and introduced the objectives, orientations and contents in the draft Project. Thereby, delegates exchanged, discussed and contributed ideas to supplement and perfect the Project, helping the Project to be built close to the requirements of practice to ensure feasibility and help bring the best results. Many delegates recommended increasing the number of pilot models of emission reduction production in ecological regions and shortening the pilot implementation time to soon replicate the model...
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Hoang Trung acknowledged and highly appreciated the delegates for their enthusiastic opinions and requested the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection to absorb all the delegates' opinions to complete the draft Project, report to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment in August 2025 for consideration, approval and early coordination with all units to implement in the coming time.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Hoang Trung emphasized that converting crop production towards low emissions is not only a technical solution but also a choice and a strategy to improve the competitiveness of the Vietnamese crop production industry, which is our responsibility today towards the living environment and future generations. The project is expected to be the foundation for forming a low-emission agricultural ecosystem, where the State creates policies, businesses invest in technology, farmers are the subjects of transformation and international partners are resources to accompany...
