The guy goes trekking to do special things

There was a young man who gave up his stable job in the IT field to do trekking combined with volunteer activities for children in the highlands.

That guy is Dang Truong Giang (25 years old), who studied information technology at the Hanoi Cryptography Academy (from Hai Phong; formerly Hai Duong province), currently living in Phu Dien Ward, Hanoi City (formerly Mai Dich Ward, Cau Giay District, Hanoi City).

The life changing trip

In 2023, Giang joined his first trekking trip to relieve stress at work, from here the office worker's life changed. That trip had no phone signal, no social networks, only mountains and forests and warm conversations between strangers. Giang shared: "Ever since I was working in an office like everyone else, I participated in programs to support children in the highlands and always wanted to contribute more. That experience opened up many things for me, from there I decided to change my job direction from sitting a lot to traveling more".

At first, Giang's trips were only with a few friends and relatives, but Giang called on each person to donate from 10,000 VND - 20,000 VND to distribute meals at children's hospitals, give gifts to patients... "I didn't expect that at that time, everyone was very supportive, the appeal was small but the contributions were large, so I had more motivation to continue," Giang said.

Then in September 2024, Giang started trekking trips and each participant would contribute 50,000 VND of the trip cost to the fund to donate milk, clothes, books, and renovate schools for children in the highlands.

At first, there were only a few people, but Giang's trips later attracted more and more participants. The amount of money in the charity fund he set up also increased with each trip. Giang shared: "Because the fund is growing, in addition to going with everyone to schools to give gifts, candy, and clothes to children, I also organize long-term charity programs."

From here, the program "Journey of Love" organized by Giang with the meaning of bringing joy and joining hands to change the difficult lives of children in the highlands was born.

"Journey of Love" season 1 started at the end of December 2024 in Lung Cung village, Nam Co commune, Yen Bai province (formerly Lung Cung village, Nam Co commune, Mu Cang Chai district, Yen Bai province). Up to now, Giang and his companions have carried out 5 seasons in the villages in the northern mountainous region.

Building schools for children in mountainous areas from trekking trips

Recalling the first season, Giang still clearly remembers the excitement when he first organized the program. "Because it was the first time I came up with the idea, prepared and organized the program myself, of course I couldn't help but feel nervous, but fortunately everything went well. We were warmly welcomed by the locals. During the trip, everyone and I slept at the school, lit a campfire, sang... the feeling at that time was both emotional and happy. That moment motivated me to organize the trip for the following seasons."

According to Giang, he will soon inaugurate a new school from the fund he raised. His biggest goal is to build schools for children in disadvantaged areas, and activities such as giving gifts, milk, and candy are just stepping stones to spread positive energy and connect people.

Giang confided: "Thanks to everyone's strong support, the trekking trips and love connection programs have been very successful in the past seasons, so I will continue to try harder to be able to build more schools in the future."

Do Huyen Trang (25 years old), living in Lang Ward, Hanoi (formerly Lang Thuong Ward, Dong Da District, Hanoi), one of the regulars who joined Giang on the trek, said: "Joining the trek not only helps me improve my health but also opens up opportunities to connect with many like-minded friends. In particular, combining volunteer activities in each trip is an experience that I truly cherish and love."

Talking about the moment that impressed Trang the most when participating in volunteer activities to bring joy to children, Trang shared: "We once organized a statue painting activity for the children. In the city, statue painting is a very normal thing, but for the children in the highlands, this was the first time they held a brush, painted a statue, and were free to create. When we arrived, waved and handed the statues to the children, seeing their eyes sparkling, eager, and filled with innocent happiness, made me extremely touched."

Once, by chance, when a friend invited her to go trekking, Vu Thi Van Anh (28 years old), living in Tu Liem Ward, Hanoi (formerly My Dinh 1 Ward, Nam Tu Liem District, Hanoi) felt lucky not to miss this trip. She shared: "I started participating because my friend invited me to go with Giang's trekking group. About a month later, I continued to participate in another trip. At that time, Giang trusted me to support some tasks on the journey. When I went to the school, I saw that the children were extremely cute, but their lives were lacking, with only simple dishes like black bean sweet soup, but many children had not yet eaten it. This dish was sponsored by my family, so seeing the children eat deliciously and happily, I also felt warm in my heart".

According to Van Anh, the trekking journey with Giang's group was not only an experiential trip but also brought many emotions.

Not only Van Anh and Huyen Trang, but many young people in other regions also love to explore and participate in volunteer activities. Realizing that, Giang cherishes the desire to join his teammates to make trips not only in the North but also in the South and Central regions, with the aim of bringing this journey of love to every corner of the country.
