Lenovo has just been designated as an "Official Technology Partner of the FIFA World Cup 2026," with plans to deploy a range of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to change how fans enjoy the world's biggest sporting event. In fact, this isn't the first time Lenovo has heavily invested in AI technology, as the company has introduced many exciting new concept products in the past.

A highlight of Lenovo's plan for this year's tournament is the integration of 3D digital avatars, created from 3D models and advanced AI technology. Lenovo claims these avatars, along with the new Football AI Pro tool, will enhance refereeing technology and support FIFA referee decisions. Fans will experience 3D animations in slow-motion replays of offside situations, providing a better visual context for viewers, both at home and in the stadium.

Additionally, Lenovo will integrate AI technology into referee body-worn camera systems and FIFA's existing data collection processes. The company also plans to create "digital replicas" of each venue to improve monitoring. Fans will have the opportunity to discover new ways to watch matches and interact with the cities where the events take place.

AI will significantly interfere in the 2026 World Cup, fans are 'concerned'.

These technological solutions were announced at Lenovo's Tech World innovation event during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) earlier this year. There, FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Lenovo President and CEO Yuanqing Yang shared what to expect from the upcoming World Cup. Mr. Yang stated: "We think the 2026 World Cup will be the most AI-integrated event yet. You'll see AI in football, from famous players to cameras recording referees."

Fans remain concerned that this year's 2026 World Cup experience will be boring due to excessive AI intervention.

Infantino also emphasized the importance of combining data and technology to create exceptional experiences for fans at the FIFA World Cup 2026 and the FIFA Women's World Cup 2027.

However, the use of AI technology in sports also raises many questions. Some fans may find 3D imagery boring, and there is a risk that referees will become overly reliant on image analysis to make decisions. There has been mixed opinion about VAR, with 97% of Premier League fans believing that VAR does not make watching football more enjoyable.

Nevertheless, Lenovo's advancements in body-worn referee camera technology hold great promise. Newly dubbed "Referee View," this technology promises to enhance the fan experience. Ultimately, fans worldwide will have the opportunity to judge for themselves whether Lenovo has truly improved the sport when the 2026 World Cup begins.
