Lingard shone at the right moment, helping Corinthians secure the victory. |
Lingard finally made his mark in a Corinthians shirt by scoring the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Barra in the first leg of the Copa do Brasil round of 16. The goal came in the 46th minute at the Ressacada Stadium. From a free kick taken by Matheuzinho, Pedro Raul headed the ball down to Lingard, who neatly finished into the net. The referee took five minutes to check VAR before confirming the goal.
This was the first time the former Manchester United star had scored for Corinthians since joining the club in March. More importantly, it was also Lingard's first goal since November 22nd last year, when he was still playing for FC Seoul.
After the match, the English player couldn't hide his emotions. He particularly emphasized the role of coach Fernando Diniz in helping him regain his confidence.
"It feels great. It's been a long time since I scored. The manager has given me a lot of confidence. This is a win for this big club and I hope there will be more," Lingard shared.
Lingard joined Corinthians on March 6th but had to wait for the paperwork and work visa to be completed before he could play. He made his debut for the team in the match against Fluminense on April 1st at the Maracana.
At the age of 33, Lingard signed a contract until the end of 2026, with an automatic extension clause for another season if he meets performance requirements.
The victory against Barra further extended Corinthians' unbeaten run under Diniz. After a difficult period in the Brazilian league, Corinthians are showing signs of improvement. And if Lingard truly revives his form, it could be a major boost to the ambitions of this historically rich club.
