On May 13, the National Examinations Authority (NTA) of India announced the cancellation of the NEET exam results from May 3 to facilitate an investigation into suspected cheating due to leaked exam questions. The rescheduled exam date will be announced next week.
An estimated 2.28 million candidates took the exam at more than 5,000 locations nationwide. This announcement came as a major shock to the candidates who had spent considerable time preparing intensely.
Sharma, a candidate living in Delhi, said: “I’ve been studying 12 hours a day since October, almost completely giving up leisure time and meeting friends to prepare for the exam. For us, being a NEET is almost the only way to get into prestigious medical schools.”
The medical school admissions system in India is notoriously rigorous due to the limited number of places available while millions of applicants take the exam each year. To increase their chances of competing, many students attend private cram schools outside of regular school hours, extending their study time significantly each day, especially on weekends.
The incident sparked a wave of strong criticism against India's examination system, which has faced numerous allegations of exam leaks and organizational irregularities over the years. Previously, the 2024 NEET exam was also suspected of having leaked questions due to unusually high scores among candidates, but the exam was not retaken.
