On May 22, in Hanoi, the Ministry of Industry and Trade held a conference on electricity saving and launched a nationwide electricity saving campaign.

Accordingly, in the period of 2023 - 2025, the Ministry of Industry and Trade aims to strive to save at least 2% of the total national electricity consumption annually; reduce electricity loss across the entire power system to below 6% by 2025; reduce peak capacity of the national power system through implementing demand side management (DSM) and load adjustment (DR) programs, at least 1,500 MW by 2025.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, climate change and the El Nino phenomenon have caused prolonged drought and water shortages, causing water flow to hydroelectric reservoirs in the North, Central and South regions to decrease sharply compared to the same period many years ago, greatly affecting the power generation capacity of hydroelectric plants.

Hydropower reservoirs in the Northern region continue to have poor water inflow. As of May 11, 12/12 large hydropower reservoirs had very poor water inflow, the frequency of water inflow to many reservoirs was the lowest in the past 100 years. In April and early May, water inflow to reservoirs was only below 50% of the average of many years; some reservoirs only reached 20% compared to the average, causing a serious water shortage for hydropower reservoirs.

In addition, the capacity and output of wind power plants have also declined sharply due to poor wind conditions, so the current power generation capacity is only 5.6% of the installed capacity of the plants.

According to the forecast of Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN), the operation of the power system during the peak hot months (from May to July) will be very difficult. In particular, the Northern power system will face the situation of not being able to meet the peak load of the system with the largest capacity shortage of about 1,600 - 4,900 MW.

Call for joint efforts to save electricity

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Dang Hoang An said that, in addition to drastically implementing solutions to increase electricity production and supply capacity during this year's dry season, using electricity economically and efficiently is considered one of the important and urgent solutions, contributing to ensuring sufficient electricity for economic development and social life in the coming time.

To ensure safe, continuous and reliable electricity supply during the dry season and throughout 2023, the Ministry of Industry and Trade calls on and requests central ministries, branches, EVN, and People's Committees of provinces and cities to focus on directing and promoting communication work; strengthen propaganda, disseminate widely, continuously, and in many appropriate forms on economical and efficient use of electricity to raise awareness among people, businesses and the community about saving electricity and saving energy.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade recommends that localities increase communication about the current difficult situation in electricity supply due to complicated weather developments and difficulties in supplying fuel for electricity production so that people and public opinion can clearly understand, correctly understand, agree, support, share difficulties and voluntarily practice electricity saving.

Sharing at the conference, Mr. Tran Dinh Nhan, General Director of EVN, said that by May 21, 27 provinces and cities had issued documents directing units, businesses and people in the area to use electricity economically.

To save electricity, EVN has directed all its member units to apply all solutions to save electricity by at least 10% (compared to the same period) and 15% (compared to the same period) during peak hot months (May, June, July)...
