Logitech has released a patch for a strange bug affecting macOS users when using the company's mice. This move comes after numerous Reddit users reported the issue on January 6th.

Users have reported that Logi Options Plus, the app used to manage and customize controls on Logitech accessories, has stopped working. They are unable to use features such as custom scrolling, assigning functions to buttons, and gestures.

A Reddit user reported that their Logitech mouse scroll wheel wasn't oriented correctly, and the extra buttons weren't functioning properly. When they tried to open Logitech Options Plus to check or adjust settings, the application kept opening and then restarting repeatedly, making it impossible to fix the problem.

Logitech later confirmed this was an issue. The company stated that not only was the Logi Options Plus affected, but the G Hub, the software used to manage Logitech G gaming mice and keyboards, was also similarly impacted.

According to Logitech's support page, this issue stems from the fact that the certificate required for the applications to function has expired. The problem only occurs on Macs because macOS will block certain applications if it doesn't detect a valid Developer ID certificate.

When this certificate expires, macOS will automatically block the application from functioning, even if it's legitimate software that was previously installed. This has happened with many other applications before and doesn't affect Windows users.

Logitech has now released a patch to fix the bug, but users need to install it manually because the certificate error itself is causing the in-app update feature to malfunction. Logitech states that after installing the patch, all device settings, customizations, and user profiles will remain intact.

The fix is now available for devices running macOS 26 Tahoe, macOS 15 Sequoia, macOS 14 Sonoma, and macOS 13 Ventura. For older versions, Logitech says the patch will be released in the near future.

"We handled this poorly, and this is an unacceptable mistake," a Logitech spokesperson, whose username is ATXsantucci, responded to user complaints on Reddit. They later explained the issue and apologized for the inconvenience caused.

In fact, this isn't the first time tech companies have encountered issues related to application certificates on macOS. Some versions of Zoom failed to open due to certificate-related issues and Apple's notarization mechanism after macOS tightened security. Firefox also experienced a global outage due to expired add-on certificates, disabling numerous extensions simultaneously.
