Member of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee and Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, Le Trong Yen, affirmed that Lam Dong province has enormous natural potential in wind and sunshine – advantages for developing renewable energy: wind power, solar power, especially offshore wind power.
According to provincial authorities, after the merger, Lam Dong province has 192 km of coastline and a fishing ground covering more than 52,000 km² . With high wind hours and stable wind speeds, Lam Dong is considered to have enormous potential for developing offshore wind power. In addition, Lam Dong possesses a vast plateau and abundant solar radiation – favorable conditions for attracting investment projects in the solar energy sector. The Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee shared: Developing renewable energy (wind energy, solar energy, etc.) will reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Developing renewable energy is identified as consistent with the province's industrial development plan until 2030.
According to the Provincial Department of Industry and Trade, Lam Dong currently has 97 operational renewable energy projects with a total capacity of over 3,887 MW, accounting for more than 47% of the total power generation capacity. The approved National Power Development Plan (Supplementary Power Plan VIII) projects a total renewable energy capacity of over 5,625 MW for the period up to 2030 and over 5,532 MW for the period 2031-2035. Power Plan VIII opens up new opportunities for Lam Dong to attract investors to develop renewable and green energy, thereby boosting Lam Dong's economic growth.
Recently, Lam Dong province has focused on implementing comprehensive and decisive solutions to exploit its potential and promote the development of renewable energy in the locality. The province has also attracted many economic sectors to participate in the development of renewable energy sources. Renewable energy projects have played a significant role in electricity production and distribution. High electricity growth is a driving force for the province's industrial development, in addition to meeting the electricity needs of people and businesses during the dry season. Providing safe and stable electricity also contributes to socio-economic development and ensures national security and defense in the locality.
According to the Provincial Department of Industry and Trade, regarding the strategy for developing renewable energy sources, Lam Dong ensures compliance with the Power Development Plan VIII and its revised versions, based on the principle of optimizing all factors related to power sources, transmission, distribution, and efficient and economical electricity use. Simultaneously, it will have a suitable roadmap that goes hand in hand with protecting resources and the environment, transforming the economic model, and ensuring national energy security at the lowest possible cost. Lam Dong also identifies the development of renewable and new energy sources with the goal of forming a comprehensive energy industry ecosystem based on renewable and new energy sources, oriented towards a green economy, circular economy, and low-carbon economy, as well as ensuring an energy transition that aligns with international trends, is sustainable, and equitable.
To enable Lam Dong to quickly become a regional renewable energy industry and service center, the locality will focus on attracting and developing offshore wind power projects in the coming period, combined with other renewable energy sources, to serve domestic needs and exports. Lam Dong aims to attract approximately 2,000 MW of offshore wind power investment during the 2025-2030 period and approximately 2,300 MW during the 2031-2035 period.
