Experience the cinematic beauty of the Da Lat Railway Tunnel.

Amidst the cool mountain air of Da Lat, there is a place not adorned with vibrant flowers, yet captivating hearts with its tranquil, moss-covered, and mysterious charm. That is the Railway Tunnel, a ruin nestled silently among pine forests, where time seems to have stood still, recounting the story of a golden age for Vietnam's railway industry.

Witnesses to history alongside the legendary cogwheel railway.

The Railway Tunnel is located in Da Tho village, Xuan Truong ward, Da Lat, about 20 km from the city center. It is not a newly constructed man-made structure for tourism , but rather a historical site of significant value.

The tunnel is actually part of the Thap Cham - Da Lat railway line, the legendary rack railway connecting the central coastal region with the Lam Vien plateau.

Begun by the French in the early 20th century, specifically in 1908 and completed in 1932, this was once considered one of the most magnificent and challenging transportation projects in Indochina at the time.

To get steam locomotives across steep cliffs and treacherous mountain passes, engineers of that era had to carve tunnels through the mountains, creating sturdy stone tunnels.

Having endured the vicissitudes of history and the ravages of war, the Thap Cham - Da Lat railway line has long since ceased operation, leaving behind tunnels standing isolated amidst the vast forest. Nearly a century later, the ancient rock formations are covered in a lush green moss, the weathered walls stained by time, and the faint light emanating from both ends of the tunnels create a beauty that is both wild and imbued with the spirit of the past.

It is precisely this long period of neglect by humans that has inadvertently helped this place retain its pristine, tranquil character, completely isolated from the hustle and bustle of the outside world.

The allure of cinematic beauty and an unmissable check-in location.

Recently, the Railway Tunnel has unexpectedly become a sensation on the Da Lat tourism map, attracting many young people to explore and capture unique photos. The strange allure of this place comes from the strong contrast between light and shadow, between the deep brown of the old rocks and the lush green of ferns and wildflowers.

Looking out from inside the tunnel, the entrance appears like a dazzling cinematic frame, opening up to a lush green space of forest, creating the feeling of standing before a "magical door" into a mythical world .

This enchanting and classic beauty has caught the eye of many artists and filmmakers, becoming a source of inspiration for numerous music videos and art photo shoots.

The Da Lat Railway Tunnel, viewed artistically in the music video "Hoa Ra" by singer Grey D, is one of the key elements that has helped this landmark regain strong interest and become a focal point of online searches.

A post by @sundilaca on the Threads platform sharing her experience visiting the tunnel quickly became a phenomenon, garnering nearly 1 million views and tens of thousands of interactions.

More than just a beautiful photo spot, the Railway Tunnel offers visitors a unique emotional experience. Vu Tran Khanh Linh, a tourist from Hanoi, shared: “The feeling of stepping here is like entering the magical world of a Ghibli film. I was very moved listening to the locals tell historical anecdotes associated with the structure.”

The interplay between long-standing historical value and the reach of social media has brought a new perspective to the centuries-old ruins. However, alongside the excitement of discovery, this sudden popularity also raises the need for preservation and safeguarding the pristine beauty of the site.

Despite being far from the center of Da Lat and having somewhat difficult access, for those who love the nostalgic beauty and want to find a different perspective on Da Lat, this is definitely a worthwhile journey to feel the soul of a historical structure breathing life in the heart of the vast forest.
