Farmers in Hoa Chau ward are planting their summer-autumn crop.

Reduce crop turnaround time.

Having finished harvesting the winter-spring rice crop, in recent days, Mr. Ngo Thang in Kim Doi residential area, Hoa Chau ward, has been urgently preparing the land, regularly reinforcing the embankments in the fields, actively sowing seeds early, and proactively responding to the hot weather. “The area I sow for this summer-autumn crop is over 1.5 hectares, mainly with Khang Dan and HG244 varieties.”

"This is a high-quality, short-day rice variety that can be harvested early. Given the current weather conditions, we have to proactively plant early, ensure water supply, and strictly adhere to technical procedures as guided by agricultural extension officers and the cooperative to shorten the transition period between seasons," Thang shared.

With a sun-tanned face, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Dinh from Thanh Trung commune, Hoa Chau ward, is also busy preparing for the summer-autumn crop. Regardless of the scorching sun and high temperatures, he is diligently working in the fields, tilling the soil and sowing seeds. The rice variety he uses is TH5, sown across his family's entire 0.7-hectare plot. "We chose a short-day rice variety to ensure timely harvesting, avoiding potential rain, floods, and bad weather," Mr. Dinh said.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh, Director of Kim Thanh Agricultural Cooperative, said that the entire area of the cooperative's winter-spring rice crop, over 270 hectares, was sown with varieties such as Khang Dan, TH5, and HG244. The cooperative guided farmers in carrying out technical procedures and ensuring field hygiene to ensure good rice growth. The cooperative also contracted with technical staff from the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection to guide farmers on measures to control rice pests and diseases, and to cope with hot weather to ensure crop quality.

At Van An Agricultural Cooperative in Hoa Chau ward, farmers have been urgently sowing the summer-autumn rice crop on nearly 278 hectares, including new, high-quality rice varieties such as Khang Dan, HG244, and local glutinous rice. The cooperative mobilized its members to repair irrigation canals to ensure proactive irrigation for the rice crop in case of unfavorable weather. According to Vo Phong, Director of Van An Agricultural Cooperative, by May 29th, the cooperative had completed sowing the summer-autumn rice crop. Throughout the production process, the cooperative has consistently supported and facilitated farmers in applying mechanization methods in rice sowing.

Along with other localities, farmers in Quang Dien commune, after sowing short-day and ultra-short-day rice varieties, immediately implemented measures to prevent the effects of intense heat and the potential damage to young seedlings. According to Tran Quang Hung, Director of An Xuan Agricultural Cooperative, in light of the unusual weather patterns, the possibility of El Nino, and the potential for water shortages during the seedling stage, the cooperative has guided farmers on preventive measures; at the same time, it has prepared its pumping stations to operate at full capacity to meet the water needs of the entire 254.3 hectares of the cooperative's cultivated area.

Increase productivity and output.

For the 2026 summer-autumn crop season, Hue City will plant approximately 25,108 hectares of rice. To proactively respond to the complex weather patterns, minimize the impact of pests and diseases on rice growth and development, and ensure a successful harvest, relevant agencies and localities are increasing the use of tillage machinery to plow the land immediately after harvesting the winter-spring rice crop. For areas affected by acidity and alkalinity annually, especially low-lying, waterlogged areas, lime is applied before tillage to neutralize acidity and alkalinity, thereby minimizing damage from the beginning of the season.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Truong, Head of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, said that the unit has guided the planting schedule and mainly arranged short-day and ultra-short-day rice varieties, striving to complete harvesting before August 30th to avoid damage from floods. Along with that, the Department is also strengthening the implementation of solutions to prevent and combat drought, water shortages, and saltwater intrusion to serve agricultural production in the area. At the same time, it is coordinating with relevant units to closely monitor weather developments to prepare effective drought prevention plans; mobilizing farmers to clear and reinforce irrigation canals to store water and prevent damage when drought occurs and other adverse weather conditions develop.

According to Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment Le Van Anh, in addition to solutions for drought and salinity control, this summer-autumn crop season, the city's agricultural sector will continue to conduct a more thorough assessment of the adaptability of new rice varieties under different cultivation conditions, and simultaneously develop a plan to replicate the model in localities with similar conditions. In particular, they will introduce some officially recognized rice varieties, which are involved in product consumption linkages, into production to improve productivity, yield, quality, and move towards sustainable agricultural development and increased income for farmers.
