According to the Wall Street Journal, the months-long discussions between private businesses and the Pentagon involved the Office of Strategic Capital, a lending unit established under former President Joe Biden to support businesses critical to the national security supply chain.
Among the companies being considered for funding is Unusual Machines, a drone component manufacturer where Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., serves as an advisor. Another notable name is Neros, a startup specializing in developing autonomous drones and backed by Sequoia Capital. Additionally, Performance Drone Works, a company that previously won a contract to supply reconnaissance drones to the US military, is also on the list of companies being considered for funding.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the advancement of drone technology has been identified as a "presidential priority" in President Trump's proposed $1.5 trillion defense budget for fiscal year 2027.
Several options are being discussed, including a hybrid financial support model combining loans and equity investment, which would allow the U.S. government to hold stakes in strategic businesses.
In other news, according to an analysis report published on May 27, U.S. military contractors would need at least three years to restore stockpiles of three key weapons systems that were used extensively in a war with Iran. This assessment raises concerns that the U.S. military could face firepower limitations in the event of a future conflict.

The three weapons mentioned include the Tomahawk cruise missile, used to attack targets deep within enemy territory, and the Patriot and THAAD interceptor systems, which specialize in countering missiles and drones.
According to analysts, replenishing the arsenal of modern missiles is facing numerous challenges due to an overloaded defense supply chain, limited production capacity, and increasing military demand amidst escalating strategic competition.
