High productivity
Nearly a decade ago, farmers in Long Xuyen commune introduced the 415 glutinous rice variety into production. Leading us on a tour of the fields laden with 415 glutinous rice, Mr. Hoang Huu Bac, Director of the Long Xuyen Agricultural Service Cooperative, said that in the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop, the commune had 260 hectares of rice cultivation, of which 60% was 415 glutinous rice. This rice variety has many advantages such as low pest and disease resistance, high yield, and stable selling price. This season, the cooperative has established 5 high-quality rice cultivation areas, each with a scale of 5 hectares. Of these, 4 areas are planted with 415 glutinous rice. The cooperative has focused on directing the zoning of commercial rice production, applying scientific and technical advancements and cultivation methods to production. According to Mr. Bac, this season's yield of 415 glutinous rice reached 2.4-2.5 quintals per sao (approximately 1000 square meters).
Having cultivated the 415 glutinous rice variety for about a decade, farmers in Thai Duong commune have accumulated a wealth of experience. According to Mr. Nguyen Van Sang, Director of the Thai Duong Agricultural Service Cooperative, this season the entire commune has approximately 197 hectares of 415 glutinous rice, accounting for about 50% of the total rice cultivation area. The average yield is about 2.4 quintals per sao (approximately 1000 square meters). Fields using the tray seedling cultivation method and machine transplanting can achieve yields 10-20 kg/sao higher than those transplanted by hand.
Ms. Le Thi Bay from Thai Duong commune shared: "This season, I planted 5 sao (approximately 0.5 hectares) of glutinous rice variety 415 and have already harvested it. We also usually sell fresh rice to traders right in the field. Therefore, we don't have to spend time and effort drying and preserving it, and we are assured of a market for our produce."
Developing areas for commercial rice production.
The 415 glutinous rice variety was recognized as a national variety in 1987 and can be cultivated in both seasons of the year. The early crop has a growing period of 110-115 days, and the winter-spring crop has a growing period of 145 days. This rice variety has several advantages such as good tillering ability, and the cooked sticky rice has a distinctive aroma and a chewy texture.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Giang district, glutinous rice variety 415 has been widely cultivated by farmers in the district for about 10 years now. Farmers cultivate glutinous rice 415 in both seasons, with the winter-spring season covering 2,000-2,500 hectares and the summer season covering 2,500-3,000 hectares, accounting for 50-60% of the total cultivated area. However, this rice variety has the disadvantage of poor lodging resistance and susceptibility to blast disease during the winter-spring season. To overcome this, Binh Giang district has applied the method of machine transplanting seedlings in trays. The area of 415 glutinous rice transplanted by machine in the district reaches 800-1,000 hectares/season. Machine-transplanted 415 glutinous rice has increased lodging resistance and reduced pest and disease infestation, increasing yield compared to manual transplanting.
During the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop season, Binh Giang established two large-scale commercial rice production areas: the Bac Thom No. 7 rice variety and the 415 and Hung Yen glutinous rice varieties. Rice sales were favorable in terms of both price and market. Farmers in Binh Giang often sold their rice fresh directly in the fields without the need for drying or preservation. Farmers are currently selling 415 glutinous rice in the fields for 8,800-9,000 VND/kg, sometimes reaching 9,500 VND/kg. This price is 500-1,800 VND/kg higher than other rice varieties in the district. Besides purchasing fresh paddy rice directly from farmers in the fields, many households in the communes have invested in building rice drying facilities with a capacity of 15-30 tons per kiln in Thai Hoa, Long Xuyen, Thai Duong, etc. The rice market in Binh Giang is favorable due to the presence of many large-scale drying facilities and a strong rice milling network in many communes and towns, which has facilitated the purchase of paddy rice from farmers. The development of large-scale commercial rice production models with guaranteed product sales has helped increase the economic value per unit area of cultivated land.
According to Mr. Vu Van Luyen, Deputy Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Binh Giang district, each sao (approximately 1000 square meters) of glutinous rice variety 415 yields a revenue of 2-2.5 million VND, with a profit of 1-1.5 million VND. This is a high profit margin compared to other rice varieties in the district.
