Earlier, Eugenie Bouchard (31 years old) had announced that the 2025 Canada Open in her hometown of Montreal would be the last tournament of her career. Therefore, her defeat to younger opponent Bencic also marked the official end of Bouchard's tennis career.
In the first round, Bouchard defeated the relatively unknown Emiliana Arango 2-0. She jokingly said she wouldn't retire if she won the 2025 Canada Open.
But both Bouchard and the fans in Montreal understood that this was unlikely to happen. Any match Bouchard plays at the Canada Open could be her last.
And that moment arrived when Bouchard suffered a defeat against Bencic. Perhaps the Montreal audience sensed the impending departure, which is why they filled the IGA stadium.
"Let's Go Genie!" was chanted repeatedly from the stands, growing louder as Bouchard neared defeat to Bencic. Furthermore, Bouchard received continuous applause throughout the match.

In response to the support of the home crowd, Bouchard gave an emotional speech. The 31-year-old tennis player, born and raised in Montreal, even broke down in tears. "It's so special that I get to play my last match here, in Montreal, on this court, in front of you all," Bouchard said, her voice choked with emotion.
Bouchard shared: "I remember when I was a child, I sat in these stands, hoping and dreaming that one day I would become a professional tennis player and compete in the Canada Open. And now I'm playing my final match in Montreal. It feels like a perfect moment, closing a circle."
When asked about her plans after retiring from tennis, Bouchard said she wants to sleep in, travel , and reflect on what she will do in the future.
"I feel like I missed out on something by not going to college, by not going to school," Bouchard said regretfully.
"Getting deeper into television is definitely something I'd love to do, so that could be the next step. I mean... (hesitates)...is anyone hiring? (laughs) I don't even know how to write... (hesitates, searching for the word) what do you call that...?" Bouchard wanted to talk about a "resume" but she couldn't remember because she was too emotional.
After a moment of confusion, Bouchard continued, "I don't even have that (resume - reporter). Maybe my agent can help me get one. I'm not used to doing this."
Bouchard was born and raised in Montreal, Canada , once reached world number 5, and was expected to be the "new Sharapova".
However, Bouchard's tennis career did not progress as expected. She suffered a concussion after a fall in the locker room at the 2025 US Open. Her career has been on a downward spiral ever since. In the past five years, Bouchard has not reached the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament and has consistently dropped in the WTA rankings.
