Bringing spring to the flood-stricken areas.

From villages still marked by mud after the floods in Gia Lai, Dak Lak, and Khanh Hoa, the rhythmic pounding of hammers and the sound of concrete mixers reverberate day and night. Thousands of officers and soldiers of Military Region 5 and units stationed in the area are rapidly rebuilding homes for the people in the "Quang Trung Campaign." Amidst the cold rain of the year-end, each brick laid is not only for building houses, but also for nurturing faith and extending the bond of solidarity between the military and the people.

Joining hands to rebuild homes in the "flood-stricken" area.

The devastating floods in mid-November left heartbreaking voids in many villages in Dak Lak province . Thousands of houses had their roofs blown off, walls cracked, foundations broken, or even completely collapsed. While the people were still reeling from the shock, the Party Committee and the Command of Military Region 5 promptly deployed nearly 8,000 officers and soldiers from the 2nd Division, the 315th Division, the Dak Lak Provincial Military Command, and related units to the area, launching the "Quang Trung Campaign" on December 1st. The spirit was emphasized from the outset: overcome the sun and rain, work swiftly and efficiently, so that people could have new homes to celebrate the Lunar New Year of the Horse 2026. Just one week after deployment, many houses had completed their foundations and were preparing to build walls, bringing joy to the faces of families who had lost everything after the floods.

The roofs of people's homes in the flood-affected areas are gradually being restored thanks to the efforts of the soldiers.

One afternoon in mid-December, in the cold rain, Sergeant Tran Gia Loc and his welding team from Regiment 95 (Division 2) were still diligently working on the construction site. Their discharge date was approaching, but they were still "racing against time" to help the people. Out of compassion for the soldiers' hard work, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Xuan (Phuoc Loc village, Xuan Phuoc commune) came to the site, leaning on her cane, carrying a pot of boiled sticky corn. Beside her dream house, which was taking shape, she recounted the losses after the floods and the joy of receiving financial and labor support from the government to rebuild her dual-purpose house, resistant to floods and storms, with an area of nearly 80 square meters.

It is expected that by mid-January 2026, many new houses in Dak Lak will be completed and handed over to residents.

"At this rate, in just over a month I'll be able to move into my new home, just in time to celebrate the New Year with my children and grandchildren," said Mrs. Xuan, her eyes shining with hope. In many communes such as Xuan Phuoc, Tuy An Dong, Tuy An Bac, Dong Xuan, and Hoa Xuan (Dak Lak), there are isolated residential areas with difficult roads. Building materials have to be transported by wheelbarrows and carried on stretchers for 2-3 kilometers. Despite the hardships, the officers and soldiers are determined to speed up the progress so that the people can stabilize their lives as soon as possible.

"If working during the day isn't enough, we'll work at night too."

Major Tran Anh Khoa, Deputy Political Commissar of Regiment 95, said that in the first week of December, the unit had already laid the foundations and started construction on 15 houses in Dak Lak. Houses near main roads were assigned to teams of 12-15 people; in remote areas, nearly 30 people were mobilized at times. The Engineering Company handled the difficult tasks requiring high technical skills; the remaining forces transported materials, mixed mortar, dug foundations, bent rebar, and assembled formwork. On some days, the soldiers worked from 6 am to nearly 9 pm.

In Phu Huu village (Hoa Thinh commune), which suffered heavy damage during the recent floods, the construction progress of the 315th Division has surprised many. According to Lieutenant Colonel Vo Duc Cuong, Deputy Division Commander and Chief of Staff of the 315th Division, thanks to proactively supporting the people early on, all work was carried out very quickly when the Quang Trung Campaign was launched. Of the 16 houses the unit is directly constructing, 9 are already preparing for roofing; if the weather is favorable, policy beneficiaries and vulnerable people will move into their new homes by mid-January 2026.

That spirit spread across many construction sites. On December 22nd, when the whole country celebrated the 81st anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army, the construction projects of the Quang Trung Campaign continued without a holiday. In Kim Dong village, Tuy Phuoc Dong commune, the sound of concrete mixers blended with the hammers and shovels, creating a "non-stop rhythm of construction." On neatly stacked bricks were potatoes and cassava – simple gifts from Mr. Nguyen Thanh Cuong's family and the villagers to the soldiers. No flowers, no banners, but a warm feeling of camaraderie.

The hands of soldiers rebuilt homes for people in the flood-stricken area.

“The soldiers helped my family very sincerely. They worked in the rain and wind, even at night, wearing raincoats to meet the deadline,” Mr. Cuong said. The family prepared a few extra dishes for lunch on December 22nd, as a simple way to celebrate and strengthen the bond between the military and the people.

The spirit of Quang Trung of yesteryear is being continued by the soldiers of Military Region 5 today in a "marching" without gunfire. There, each brick is a command from the heart; each drop of sweat is a promise to the people. There are no ceremonial platforms, no fireworks, but there is a "special day" on the construction site: the day when the qualities of Uncle Ho's soldiers are most authentically demonstrated.

To encourage the officers and soldiers of Regiment 739, Colonel Nguyen The Vinh, Commander of the Gia Lai Provincial Military Command, affirmed that the soldiers work three shifts, four teams, day and night, including holidays. Not only are they racing against time, but every detail of the houses is meticulously cared for to ensure durability, longevity, technical standards, safety, and aesthetics. For young soldier Nguyen Quy Duong, participating in building houses for the people is a joy and a responsibility. “Holidays or days off are not as important as the joy of the people,” Duong shared. Witnessing this dedication, Mr. Bui Thanh Long, Deputy Secretary of the Kim Dong village Party branch, was moved: “They truly are the soldiers of Uncle Ho: the people remember them when they leave, and cherish them when they stay.”

Continuing the spirit of Quang Trung of yesteryear.

The spirit of rapid progress was evident not only in the pace of work but also in the organization and direction. The Da Nang City Military Command directly constructed three new houses and repaired two in Dak Lak; the teams simultaneously built walls, poured roofs, and completed mezzanines, ensuring quality. Brigade 368 "worked day and night," maintaining tight command and control, discipline, and workplace safety. The brightly lit roofs at night are vivid evidence of the "Quang Trung's rapid progress" spirit.

The spirit of the Quang Trung campaign was "if working during the day isn't enough, then work at night."

During a direct visit to inspect each housing construction project in the flood-affected area of Thach Tuan 2 village (Hoa Xuan commune) and Phu Luong neighborhood (Dong Hoa ward, Dak Lak province), Lieutenant General Le Ngoc Hai, Commander of Military Region 5, requested that units coordinate closely, strictly maintain discipline in civilian affairs, and build safe and high-quality projects, striving to complete them ahead of schedule so that people can have new homes before Tet. “At the request of the local authorities, the Military Region Command will be ready to provide military personnel to help the people build houses, ensuring that people have new homes before the Lunar New Year,” Lieutenant General Le Ngoc Hai emphasized.

Over nearly a month of campaigning, the forces of Military Region 5 mobilized hundreds of teams with thousands of officers and soldiers, starting construction on hundreds of houses; tens of thousands of officers and soldiers participated, and many houses have completed their foundations and poured concrete floors to prevent flooding. Propaganda, public relations, visits, and gift-giving were carried out simultaneously.

By December 20th, many construction projects had entered the roofing and plastering stages. In Hoa Thinh, Phu Huu, My Dien, and other areas, the frameworks of new houses were gradually becoming visible. People were more eager than ever to move into their new homes, moved by the sight of soldiers working day and night in shifts. Local authorities coordinated to ensure the supply of materials and equipment, creating favorable conditions for construction to proceed on schedule.

They cut iron and built walls throughout the night.

Chairman of the People's Committee of Tuy An Dong commune (Dak Lak), Tran Van Bien, expressed his gratitude: "Tuy An Dong is one of the localities most severely affected by the recent historic flood. Without the support from the central government, without the nationwide concern, and without the soldiers from all over coming to help, it would probably have taken a very long time for the people to stabilize their lives. Thanks to the soldiers, this Tet holiday, dozens of families in Tuy An Dong will be able to move into new homes, and hundreds of families will have their worries about the upcoming rainy season eased. Besides building and repairing houses for the people, in recent days, the soldiers have also organized visits and given gifts to policy beneficiary families and poor households, helped schools overcome the consequences of the flood, actively cleared drainage ditches, and carried out general cleaning on the roads. In times of hardship and difficulty, the soldiers are always a solid support for the people."

New roofs are gradually appearing amidst the flood-stricken areas, not just providing shelter from the rain and sun. They symbolize faith, the strong bond between the military and the people, and the swift progress made for the people's happiness. And in the midst of this urgent construction, the spirit of the Quang Trung Campaign of yesteryear is being revived – simple, persistent, and focused on the people, so that spring may arrive sooner in these rural areas that once suffered so much loss.
