The national flag on the day of victory

On a weekend morning, while driving past the gate of the Binh Phuoc Radio - Television and Newspaper Station (BPTV), I suddenly saw two girls posing for photos in front of the newspaper reading space that BPTV designed to serve readers. In addition to the pages of the newly released newspaper hanging on the wall to serve readers, the newspaper reading space was decorated with Party flags, national flags and small, pretty lanterns. I immediately turned my car around and asked permission to record that lovely image. The two girls, Le Thi Lan Anh (Tan Phu ward) and Do Thi Kim Oanh (Tan Dong ward), both born in 1993, happily agreed but seemed a bit hesitant. Kim Oanh said:

        - Today we just took "draft" photos so that tomorrow we can "dress up" and take photos in spaces with more national flags, teacher.

- Why do you like taking pictures with the national flag?

- We don’t know why, but any picture with a flag is much more beautiful. Maybe the bright red flag always brightens up the picture. Moreover, these days, everyone wants to have beautiful pictures with the national flag, ma’am!

Yes! I myself am also excited about the appointment with friends to go to Saigon, to Bach Dang wharf, to Nguyen Hue walking street ( Ho Chi Minh City) to join in the joyful atmosphere of the whole country in the days of preparation for the great celebration of the 50th anniversary of the country's complete unification, the North - South reunited as one family.

Lan Anh and Kim Oanh took a photo at BPTV's newspaper reading space.

Every country, every nation has its own national flag. But perhaps in few countries, the national flag is as loved and becomes a creative object on all artistic platforms as in Vietnam. The national flag - a symbol of the nation's soul, the people's heart, and the spirit of lasting solidarity. The flag is also a sacred symbol, expressing the will, revolutionary enthusiasm as well as the heroic sacrifice of all Vietnamese people in the wars to repel invaders and regain independence and freedom for the Fatherland. Because of that sacred meaning, hanging the national flag has become a need and a unique cultural feature of all Vietnamese people. Every time there is an important event, a piece of good news like Vietnamese people winning glory on the international stage, even when the country is facing losses and sorrows like natural disasters or a respected leader passing away... people hold hands together and the national flag is indispensable in that situation to express the spirit of solidarity, gratitude, pride or sorrow of every Vietnamese citizen.

On important national holidays, art performances with thousands of participants forming the map of Vietnam or the shape of a five-pointed star always stimulate the excitement of both performers and viewers. The image of the country and the five-pointed star are also brought to the stage through dance and sports performances; incorporated into Vietnamese Ao Dai and performed all over the world. On the occasion of international cultural and sporting events, many Vietnamese actors, athletes and fans proudly wear shirts with the red flag and yellow star motif as a way to express solidarity and national pride.

Two years ago, social networks appeared many videos and images sharing the drawing of giant national flags on people's roofs, on fences, gates, even on rolling doors, cars... During holidays, from rural to urban areas, from lowlands to highlands, red flags with yellow stars were everywhere. People reminded each other and helped each other hang the national flag to express joy and the spirit of national solidarity. These actions contributed to spreading the image of Vietnam to the international community, creating a sense of community cohesion.

Joining the crowd of people in all kinds of costumes with the national flag on Nguyen Hue walking street and Bach Dang wharf - where the artillery parade site is located to serve the 50th anniversary of the country's reunification, I clearly felt the joy in every eye, on every face, in the greetings and laughter. Although it was not yet the main celebration, the flow of people from all over the country and from abroad pouring into Saigon, especially District 1 and Bach Dang wharf area, was many times higher than normal. Rows of passenger vans carrying groups of guests wearing Ao Dai with the map of Vietnam or T-shirts with the red flag with a yellow star continuously poured into Bach Dang wharf. There were groups of young people carrying suitcases of belongings to be able to take the most beautiful photos with the soldiers protecting the artillery site. Many couples came to take wedding photos next to the cannons or in the exhibition space of the "From Bach Dang victory to the great victory of April 30, 1975" exhibition on Nguyen Hue walking street. Unfortunately, I was caught in a heavy rain and couldn’t take shelter in time, causing my ao dai with the national flag pattern to get wet and stick to my body. Luckily, I still had another ao dai on standby to take a few photos in the special space of Bach Dang wharf.

The rain stopped, and people poured out again. I was amazed to see old people sitting in wheelchairs, children lying in strollers with red flag costumes, being carefully moved by their relatives in the sea of bright red people. The flags on the trembling hands of the old people; the national flag stickers on the chubby cheeks of the children made my heart ache. I wondered: what made that sea of people use the national flag as costumes, as makeup, as decoration for themselves or for the whole team on a special trip? What made all the Vietnamese people in the country, Vietnamese people abroad, and international tourists flock to the place where the final rehearsals of the forces preparing for the 50th anniversary of the country's reunification were taking place!? Perhaps, when wearing clothes with the red flag with yellow star or the map of Vietnam, people feel like they have become a part of the festival space, of the exciting atmosphere, of the important historical event of the nation that millions of hearts are looking towards. Only then can we explain why strangers hold hands to cross the street to take pictures, why this group asks to take pictures with another group, or why people share with strangers tiny hand-held flags, red flag with yellow star stickers on cheeks, on chests...

Then it was time to return to work and daily life. I was reluctant to leave the bustling festival atmosphere of Bach Dang Wharf and Nguyen Hue Walking Street. On the bus back to Dong Xoai, there were two young people who had just returned from watching the parade rehearsal. The conversation on the bus was lively with a "shower" of compliments about the performances, although not yet official, but already the "best of the best" for the boys and girls in the police and military forces participating in the rehearsal. And strangely enough, they were all wearing shirts with the red flag with a yellow star and even boasted that in this suitcase, each of us had two sets of Ao Dai with the map of Vietnam and the national flag!

On the morning of April 27, Le Hong Phong Primary School, Long Phuoc Ward, Phuoc Long Town organized a picnic for students of grades 4 and 5 at Phuoc Long Victory Museum.
