Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (Comac) has just received an additional order for 100 C919 aircraft from the country's second-largest airline.
China Eastern signed a contract today (September 28) to purchase an additional 100 C919 aircraft from Comac. The value of the deal was not disclosed.
However, based on list prices, the deal is worth approximately $9.9 billion. China Eastern's order for an additional 100 C919 vessels will be delivered between next year and 2031.
China Eastern currently owns a fleet of nearly 800 aircraft of various types and is the second largest airline in China. It was also the first airline to use Comac's C919 narrow-body aircraft, starting in May 2023.
This Shanghai-based airline has purchased five C919 aircraft, three of which have already been delivered. The remaining two are expected to be delivered later this year. Currently, China Eastern uses these aircraft for the Shanghai-Chengdu route.

At a recent event, Comac Chairman He Dongfeng stated that the airline had received orders for 1,061 aircraft as of early September. Last week, GallopAir, a new airline based in Brunei, announced it had signed an agreement to purchase 30 Comac aircraft, including 15 C919s. This could also be seen as a major blow to Boeing, which has not received any orders for narrow-body aircraft from Chinese airlines in recent years.
After 14 years of development, Comac received certification from China for the C919 aircraft at the end of September 2022. This narrow-body aircraft has a maximum capacity of nearly 170 passengers and is considered to be China's ambitious competitor to Airbus and Boeing.
Beijing hopes the C919 will help China reduce its dependence on foreign technology. The government aims for the C919 to capture 10% of the domestic market share by 2025. Prior to the C919, Comac produced China's first jet, the ARJ21, and has now received orders for 775 of these aircraft.
