The exercise was authorized by the Venezuelan government. This is the first US military exercise held in the country since the kidnapping of former President Nicolas Maduro and his wife.
The exercise involved two US Marine Corps MV-22B Osprey aircraft, which landed near the US Embassy, as well as naval vessels entering Venezuelan waters in the Caribbean Sea.
The US delegation shared a video showing the aircraft landing near the complex, and stated that it was a "military response exercise."
"Ensuring the military's rapid response capability is a key element in its readiness to perform missions, both in Venezuela and around the world ," the embassy statement said.
The markings on the aircraft indicate they belonged to the 263rd Medium Tilt-Robot Squadron of the Marine Corps.
This unit is stationed on the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima, currently operating in the Caribbean. This is the ship that brought Maduro and his wife to the United States shortly after their abduction.
The Pentagon's actions sparked a small protest in the city. Nearly 100 activists gathered to condemn the exercise as an "insult" to the nation.
The protesters were seen carrying Venezuelan flags with the words "No acceptance of US military exercises."
The kidnapping of the former Venezuelan president has left the country completely dependent on the United States.
The country's interim government has actively cooperated with the US since the raid.
Maduro remains detained in the United States on numerous charges, including drug trafficking. He vehemently denies all charges, describing himself as a "prisoner of war."
