Are Chromebooks under 10 million VND a good value for money?

The market is flooded with Chromebooks priced under 10 million VND that are touted as "good value for money." But do they live up to the hype?

With the mainstream laptop market becoming increasingly expensive, finding an affordable yet smooth and powerful enough laptop for studying is becoming a challenge. Chromebooks, with Google's ChromeOS platform, are being hailed by tech enthusiasts as an effective solution, offering smooth and stable performance even on low-end configurations.

Attractive prices

In Vietnam, a typical Windows laptop needs to cost between 12 and 15 million VND to have decent specifications, a Full HD screen, good battery life, and smooth performance for 2-3 years. Meanwhile, Chromebooks are popular in the 6-9 million VND range, with some models even as low as 5 million VND, yet their processing power is just as smooth as Windows models costing twice as much.

Engineer Nguyen Huu Duy, a technology consultant at The Gioi Dien Thoai (Mobile World), said: “Chromebooks are cheaper than Windows laptops because Google targets education and general users, and subsidizes these products. They optimize ChromeOS to run smoothly on low-end configurations, so manufacturers don't need to invest in expensive CPUs or GPUs. This philosophy significantly reduces costs.”

Chromebooks typically have a beautiful, compact design and are inexpensive.

The market currently offers many Chromebook models suitable for students at affordable prices. Besides the expensive Google Chromebook Pixel models, major manufacturers like Samsung, HP, Acer, and Dell all have Chromebook lineups in both budget and premium segments, thanks to support from Google.

The HP Chromebook x360 14, priced at around 9.6 million VND, features an 8th-generation Intel Core i processor, a 14-inch Full HD touchscreen display, and a 360° hinge. It has 8GB of RAM, 128GB of eMMC storage, and an 8.5-hour battery life.

The Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Go is officially sold in Vietnam for approximately 7.8 million VND, featuring an Intel Celeron N4500 CPU, a 14-inch HD screen, 4GB of RAM, and 32GB of eMMC storage. The battery provides up to 10 hours of use.

The Acer Chromebook 516 GE-1H stands out in the 9 million VND price range, boasting an Intel Core i5 1240P processor, a 16-inch WQXGA 120Hz display, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD.

The Lenovo Chromebook Duet Gen 9, priced at nearly 10 million VND, is a hybrid laptop with a detachable keyboard, powered by a MediaTek Kompanio 838 CPU. It features an 11-inch WUXGA touchscreen display, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of eMMC storage, and a battery life of up to 15 hours.

Is the quality really that good?

When it comes to "good value for money," users are usually concerned about performance, stability, battery life, and overall experience. Many experts believe that in the under 10 million VND price range, Chromebooks offer a better experience than many inexpensive Windows laptops.

Tran Minh Khoi, a lecturer in Information Technology in Hanoi , shared: “Although Chromebooks don't have powerful configurations, they provide a smooth experience for basic tasks: web browsing, document editing, and online learning. The device boots up quickly in just a few seconds, and the battery usually lasts 8-12 hours. Compared to cheap Windows laptops that often lag after 2-3 years, Chromebooks remain more stable.”

Commonly mentioned advantages of Chromebooks include long battery life: Many models last 10–15 hours, suitable for a full school day; extremely fast boot-up, in just 5–10 seconds; high security: automatic ChromeOS updates, virtually no risk of viruses; Chromebooks typically weigh only 1.1 to 1.3 kg, making them very convenient to carry to school.

The ChromeOS platform operates primarily in an internet environment and on cloud storage, so it doesn't require a lot of hardware power.

Besides office and cloud applications, a major strength of Chromebooks is their ability to run all Android applications. This means that tasks that Android smartphones or tablets can perform can also be done on Chromebooks. Popular photo and video editors like KineMaster, Davinci, and Capcut are all available. Adobe has also now supported a full version of Photoshop for Chromebooks.

Chromebooks have helped change the traditional way of thinking about buying computers, as they no longer rely heavily on hardware power. All tasks are now performed online, so the computer is primarily a communication device; word processing and homework are done using built-in applications.

This is also a modern work trend, providing a seamless experience on the internet. The advantage is that by simply manipulating and editing a document link, teachers can clearly understand the students' progress. For office workers who need to use applications on multiple devices, working via online files gives organizations an overview and allows them to update project adjustments in real time, ensuring work progress.

"If you pay attention, you'll notice that Chromebooks usually don't have high storage capacity. Because ChromeOS mainly revolves around the Chrome browser, web applications, and Android, data is stored in the cloud, so it doesn't require powerful hardware. The device provides good support for both Apple's iCloud and Google Drive, as well as other popular cloud services," added Master's student Tran Minh Khoi.

Furthermore, Chromebooks are considered an ideal learning environment, a fact intentionally set by Google. Chromebooks integrate Google Classroom, Meet, Docs, Sheets Slides, Assignments, Groups, and Drive – tools familiar to students and for teamwork in offices. In Vietnam, Google also provides free Google Workspace for Education, specifically designed for educational purposes.

Unfortunately, there are limitations.

However, Chromebooks are not the perfect device for everyone. Engineer Dang Hoang Tuan, an IT solutions consultant at the Vietnam Informatics Association, commented: “Chromebooks are suitable for students in social sciences, online learning, and light office work. But if you study engineering or architecture and need AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or video editing software, a Chromebook will be useless. That's its biggest limitation.”

Firstly, Chromebooks cannot install Windows applications (.exe), because Chromebooks are designed to only run properly when connected to an internet connection, although some offline versions are now available.

Long battery life and smooth operation even after many years are advantages that make Chromebooks suitable for studying.

Gaming on Chromebooks is extremely limited; the device is only suitable for Android games downloaded from the Google Play Store, while PC games are not feasible. Engineer Dang Hoang Tuan stated: "Of course, for a device specifically designed for learning, limitations in gaming capabilities are not unreasonable."

Le Quynh Anh, a second-year linguistics student in Ho Chi Minh City, shared: “I bought a used Chromebook Spin 311 for only 8.5 million VND. It's more than enough for online learning, taking notes with a stylus, and doing assignments. Drafting, translating documents, or learning foreign languages on Google Docs is very convenient. The downside is that when I need specialized software for my field, I can't use it; I have to use a desktop computer.”

Although Chromebooks account for over 50% of the educational laptop market in the US, their presence in Vietnam remains relatively modest. This is due to users' familiarity with Windows and limitations in the service ecosystem. However, with the trend of online learning and the demand for affordable laptops, Chromebooks are gradually gaining more attention from parents and students.

According to Engineer Dang Hoang Tuan, Chromebooks are the ideal second laptop, or even the first laptop, for students in the social sciences. However, they cannot yet replace Windows laptops in specialized fields.”

As an affordable device, the Chromebook proves that "cheap" doesn't always mean "poor." Meeting the right needs and targeting the right users, it fully deserves to be called a "good value" computer, especially suitable as a tool for students entering a new school year.
