Real Madrid has just faced a major personnel shock as their star striker Mbappe has suffered a sprained left knee.
Information regarding the French striker's injury was confirmed by Real Madrid in a statement released on the last day of 2025.

French newspaper L'Equipe reports that Mbappe will be sidelined for at least three weeks due to this injury, meaning he will definitely miss the match against Real Betis in La Liga's 18th round on January 4th.
There is also a high possibility that Mbappe will miss the Spanish Super Cup held in Saudi Arabia. According to the schedule, if Real Madrid overcome Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals on January 8th, they will face either Barcelona or Bilbao in the final on January 11th.
The absence of star striker Kylian Mbappe could significantly impact Los Blancos' ambitions of winning titles.
In fact, Mbappe had been experiencing mild pain in his knee during recent matches. Initially, the issue didn't worry the Real Madrid medical team. However, detailed examinations on December 31st led the club to decide to rest Mbappe to avoid any more serious risks.
The real concern arose when the 1998-born striker struggled with his acceleration, which is his greatest strength. The intense schedule of matches since the start of the season is believed to be the reason why the French striker's knee has become overloaded.
Before his injury, Mbappe was in impressive form, scoring 18 goals in 18 La Liga matches and 9 goals in 5 Champions League group stage matches.
The 2018 World Cup champions also just went through a streak of three full 90-minute matches in just one week, facing Alaves and Sevilla in La Liga and Talavera de la Reina in the Copa del Rey.
Statistics show that Mbappe has scored as many as 59 goals for Real Madrid in 2025, equaling the club's record for most goals scored in a single year, a record previously held by Cristiano Ronaldo.
Therefore, the fact that star striker Mbappe will be out for up to three weeks is a huge loss for Real Madrid, especially given the uncertainty surrounding the future of coach Xabi Alonso.
According to Marca (Spain), three consecutive victories against Sevilla, Alaves, and Talavera only temporarily eased the pressure on him, but were not enough to completely reassure the Bernabeu management.
Internal assessments suggest that Real Madrid's problems lie not in individual match results but in an overall lack of identity, a playing style that fails to inspire confidence, and a professional project under coach Alonso that is believed to be going off track.
In this context, the upcoming match against Real Betis is seen as the next test for coach Xabi Alonso. Some even suggest that if he fails to win the Super Cup, the Spanish strategist's future at Real Madrid will be over.
