This was Messi's first appearance at Camp Nou since the stadium's renovation. This coincidence led many to believe that Messi's visit was not just a nostalgic moment, but also carried a deeper meaning – a signal of the day he would be officially honored at Barca's hallowed ground.
President Joan Laporta once stated his desire to hold a special ceremony to honor Messi: "It would be wonderful if we inaugurated the new stadium with a tribute to Messi, in front of a packed Camp Nou. Of course, that depends on his wishes, but I would very much like to do that while I am president."
The relationship between Messi and Laporta had been strained since the summer of 2021, when Barcelona were forced to part ways with him due to financial difficulties. At that time, Messi cut short his vacation to return and sign a new contract, but ultimately left in tears and joined PSG.
