Microsoft, the US technology giant, announced it will lay off thousands of employees, marking the third round of layoffs in recent months.
A Microsoft spokesperson said the job cuts would affect less than 4% of the total workforce, or about 9,000 people.
This is Microsoft's largest round of layoffs since cutting 10,000 employees in 2023 and comes amid a similar trend of other tech companies reducing their workforce.
A Microsoft spokesperson said that Microsoft is reducing management layers and using new technologies to improve employee productivity.
The job cuts are occurring as technology companies, including Microsoft, use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve workforce efficiency.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated earlier this year that 20% to 30% of the company's code is generated by AI, and that the company is investing billions of dollars in AI infrastructure.
According to reports, Microsoft has planned to lay off 3% of its workforce. It is unclear whether AI directly contributed to the July 2nd layoffs and which departments within Microsoft will be affected.
The job cuts on July 2nd follow Microsoft's decision to lay off approximately 7,000 employees, or 3% of its workforce, by May 2025.
As of July 2024, the date Microsoft last officially reported its total workforce, the company had 228,000 employees.
Many other tech companies have also implemented layoffs this year, including Meta and Bumble. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy warned employees last month that AI would eventually help the company reduce its workforce.
Microsoft reported in April 2025 that profits had increased 18% to $25.8 billion in the three months ending March 31, thanks to strong performance in its cloud services and AI segments.
