Accordingly, Microsoft is testing a new way to create hyperlinks in Word to shorten the process and speed up document editing.
Previously, Word users had to open the "Insert Hyperlink" dialog box or rely on the automatic conversion of entered URLs. Another option was to highlight the text, right-click, and select "Hyperlink" to paste the web address, email address, or file path. The web version of Word offered more flexibility, allowing links to headings, bookmarks, or external pages.

Microsoft wants to shorten the time it takes to add links to text in Word.

Now, with the new update Microsoft has applied to Word, users can paste links directly into selected text in Word on the web, Windows, and macOS. The text will then instantly become a hyperlink without needing any intermediate dialog box. This is considered one of the most frequently used operations when drafting documents, from citing sources and inserting references to sharing work resources.
A small but worthwhile update for Microsoft Word.
Jenny Ye, Word team product manager at Microsoft, said adding links needs to be faster and more seamless. The new approach reduces the number of clicks, allowing users to focus on the content rather than formatting steps.
Essentially, the new operation consists of only three steps: Copy the link, select the text in Word, and paste. The text will automatically be converted into a hyperlink, which is why Microsoft calls this feature "overwrite".
Microsoft stated that the feature is now enabled in Word for web. For Word on Windows, the update applies to version 2511 (Build 19530.20006) and later, while on macOS it applies to version 16.104 (Build 25120915) and later.
