As Google I/O 2026 approaches, information about Google's Gemini project continues to leak. Each day, new details about Gemini emerge, and this time, Google appears to be experimenting with giving users more control over how the AI chatbot "thinks" before responding.

Google wants to take Gemini's thinking abilities to the next level.

According to a report from 9to5Google , some users have discovered a new "Thinking Level" option in the Gemini app. This feature appears within the existing model selector, where users can choose between options such as Fast, Thinking, Pro, or Google AI Plus.
Notably, Google is not only allowing users to choose a model but is also testing the level of reasoning that model can perform when handling a task. The new Thinking Level option is now available when users select Fast (Gemini 3 Flash) or Gemini 3.1 Pro with thinking enabled. However, the rollout of this feature is currently limited.
This information is quite familiar, as Google AI Studio previously offered similar options with Low, Medium, and High levels of reasoning. Integrating this flexibility into the Gemini app seems like a logical step, especially as AI companies compete on the intelligence and autonomy of their virtual assistants.
Gemini is about to become more than just an AI chatbot.
Allowing users to control the balance between speed and deep reasoning ability could make Gemini more versatile in everyday tasks. Not every AI request requires maximum reasoning ability; sometimes users just need a quick answer without long wait times.

Additionally, Google is expanding Gemini's ecosystem of third-party app integrations. Currently, Gemini works with apps like GitHub, OpenStax, Spotify, and WhatsApp. Recent support documentation suggests integrations with Canva, Instacart, and OpenTable are also under development, although none are yet live.
Google I/O is often where the company introduces new Gemini features aimed at helping the app gradually become a true digital assistant—not just a chatbot, but capable of performing multiple tasks across various apps and services. Gemini's development is not only about providing smarter answers but also about becoming a supportive tool in users' digital lives, ideally without making things complicated.
