Expand the range of separate exams.

Báo Dân ViệtBáo Dân Việt09/11/2024

Some separate entrance exams organized by higher education institutions will expand in terms of scope and the number of participating schools to facilitate the admissions process for candidates in the 2025 enrollment season.

Adding more subjects to the V-SAT exam.

Mr. Ha Xuan Thanh, Director of the National Center for Testing and Educational Quality Assessment, Ministry of Education and Training , provided information on the organization and shared use of results for the 2025 V-SAT computer-based university entrance exam. The Center has reviewed and updated the exam content, adjusted the exam structure and format, and made the exam format more suitable for assessing the competencies of high school students according to the 2018 General Education Program. The V-SAT exam was developed by the National Center for Testing and Educational Quality Assessment, combining modern measurement and testing techniques to build a question bank and applying information technology in exam organization.

The 2025 exam will consist of eight independent subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, English, and Literature. Compared to the previous year, Literature has been added this year. The exam will be conducted on computers, with a time limit of 90 minutes for Mathematics and Literature, and 60 minutes for the remaining subjects.

A significant new feature of the exam is the change in question format. Previously, the exam only had three question types, but now it includes group-based questions. Accordingly, the V-SAT exam covers content from the current high school curriculum, with four multiple-choice question types: true/false; objective four-choice; matching; and short answer or essay. Many of the questions have been designed using the assessment methods of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA).

According to Mr. Thanh, each V-SAT exam consists of 25 questions with 85 sub-sections. Last year, candidates received points for each correct answer, but this year, to achieve the maximum score in each subject, candidates must answer all 85 sub-sections correctly. This is a solution introduced by the National Testing Center to minimize candidates guessing (guessing randomly) and reduce the element of chance in exams.

In 2025, in addition to the increasing number of universities participating in and using the V-SAT exam results, several universities will organize their own entrance exams. The total number of entrance exams organized by higher education institutions next year will exceed 10.

Mr. Thanh affirmed that candidates do not need to attend test preparation courses for the V-SAT exam format. In 2023, this exam was held for the first time at Saigon University and Ho Chi Minh City University of Banking. In 2024, five universities organized the exam, and ten universities used the results for admissions. After two years of organization, the exam has met the requirements of a standardized test, and the standardized test format ensures reliability when universities implement the exam using the same question bank.

In 2025, 18 universities signed cooperation agreements to organize and share the V-SAT exam results, including: Thai Nguyen University, Duy Tan University, Saigon University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Banking, University of Finance - Marketing, Ho Chi Minh City Open University, Can Tho University, Vinh University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics - Finance, Hung Yen University of Technology and Education, Van Lang University, Dong Thap University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Law, Tra Vinh University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Lac Hong University, Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, and the Banking Academy.

Increase access opportunities for students in remote and disadvantaged areas.

The 2025 Thinking Skills Assessment Exam (TSA) of Hanoi University of Science and Technology is expected to be held in 3 sessions on weekends, with 3-4 testing teams per session at 30 locations. In addition to the previously established testing locations, Hanoi University of Science and Technology will open a new testing site in Lao Cai province to support students in the Northwest region. Session 1 will take place from January 18-19, 2025, Session 2 on March 8-9, 2025, and Session 3 on April 26-27, 2025.

In 2024, the TSA exam was held in 6 sessions on weekends with 30 test locations in Hanoi and 11 provinces and cities, accommodating nearly 50,000 test-takers with a total of 21,000 candidates. The results of the exam were used by more than 50 universities for their 2024 admissions process.

According to the leaders of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, to align with the new general education program of the Ministry of Education and Training, from 2023 onwards, the content and format of the TSA exam have been implemented as designed and will remain stable for many years to come.

The exam consists of three sections: mathematical reasoning (60 minutes), reading comprehension (30 minutes), and scientific reasoning/problem-solving (60 minutes). These are three independent sections, and the questions will focus on assessing the candidate's thinking ability in each section, not directly testing knowledge of any particular subject. The exam is computer-based multiple-choice, and the results will be valid for two years for university admissions purposes.
