Expanding opportunities for high school students to study pre-university programs.

Hanoi National University plans to recruit more than 150 high school students, starting as early as grade 10, to take pre-university credit courses, more than three times the current number.

This information was presented at the workshop on the High School Talent Incubation Program (VNU 12+) of the Vietnam National University, Hanoi, on the afternoon of April 17th. The program aims to attract talented students and create a pool of talent for the field of basic science .

Students will receive early career guidance and scientific research training, shortening the time it takes to obtain a university degree.

According to Le Quan, Director of Hanoi National University, the program will initially recruit approximately 10% of students from affiliated high schools (150-160 students) through selection or a combination of selection and interviews. Each year, students will study approximately 5-10 credits. Upon accumulating a minimum of 3 credits, students will be given priority for admission to universities within Hanoi National University.

To participate, students need to meet one of the following conditions: be a member of a national or international gifted student team; win an award in the High School Olympiad; or have achieved a good academic record in grade 10 (for specialized students) or grade 10 and the first semester of grade 11 (for non-specialized students).

In addition, students need to achieve a foreign language proficiency level of at least level 2 according to the 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework for Vietnam (level A2).

In fact, six years ago, Hanoi National University implemented a similar pre-credit program. To date, nearly 50 students from specialized high schools in Social Sciences and Humanities and Natural Sciences have registered to study there, all from Hanoi.

The Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City also announced late last year that it would pilot a program selecting outstanding high school students nationwide to take some university credits in advance. Students would study through MOOC (Massively Multi-Course Online Courses) online lecture systems of member universities, and then take an in-person exam to have their credits recognized.

Educators believe that this approach will shorten the time and effort families and society invest in nurturing outstanding individuals. Students will also receive early career guidance, avoiding choosing the wrong major or profession when entering university.

Around the world , many universities have similar models. For example, at Tsinghua University in China, exceptionally talented students can start studying at the age of 13 or 14, graduate with a bachelor's degree at 16 or 18, and earn a doctorate at 20.

In the US, AP (Advanced Placement) programs are very popular. Students can choose to take some college-level introductory courses in advance, even while still in high school.
