Breakdance, a part of hip hop culture, has become an official sport at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Breakdancers are judged based on criteria such as execution, musicality, originality, and technique.
Popular for its athleticism and creativity, breakdance also comes with health risks such as carpal tunnel syndrome and nerve problems.
Along with that is a condition called "headspin hole," which begins with hair loss and then develops into a lump on the top of the head.
According to CNN , in a publication this week in the medical journal BMJ , doctors treated a benign tumor that had grown thicker than 1 inch (2.54 cm) in a 30-year-old man who had been breakdancing for nearly 20 years.
This condition, sometimes called a "breakdance bulge," is thought to be caused by repeated friction between the scalp and the floor, along with constant pressure during headspin movements, accumulating over years of breakdancing.

Dr. Christian Baastrup Søndergaard, a neurosurgeon from Rigshospitalet Hospital in Copenhagen (Denmark), co-author of the report and the patient's treating physician, explained: "Repeated stress on the skull, scalp, and skin can cause inflammation, and over time, minor bleeding can cause the skin to thicken and form scar tissue, creating the characteristic bulge."
The patient reported feeling discomfort and pain, and often had to wear a hat to cover the tumor when going outside.
After the tumor was surgically removed, the patient felt much more relieved. "Many people told me that they no longer noticed the bulge and that my head looked completely normal," the patient said.
